What's the best program for creating thumbnails from multiple files?
I currently use Photoshop and do it manually, but there must be a quicker easy way.
All the best

yep, there is... Photoshop -> Actions, then duplicate set of actions for how many pictures you need to do at a time

In Photoshop you could just create an action as said above but then create a droplet using that which you drag complete directories into.
Personally though I just use a custom function created in php, run it and it will search the directories you list for pictures without thumbnails and create them. Good thing about it is that you dont need to worry about the original size, it will resize them to a maximum width or height whichever is hit first while constraining the proportions. You can set the naming conventions, sizes and rotate etc without any hassle.

real graphic designers use notepad
Thumbplus still makes some of the best thumbs and has a really easy to hack template system for making gallery pages.
find the .tpt files, rename them to .html, edit in Dreamweaver and you're off.
