I don't mean the luncheon meat type stuff I mean what is considered spam on the internet.

We hear people getting pissed off when they get "spam" in their e-mail. People get accused of "spam" when they try to promote their programme or whatever. So what is spam?

If "spam" is unsolicited advertising then why do people start threads like "spam with midgets fucking corn on the cob sponsors" ?, cos surely if you have asked for such sponsors then any replies would not be "spam".
Do they mean "spam" me with your ref code, but then again is it "spam" cos it was asked for and therefore not unsolicited.

WHAT IS SPAM?

you have to distinguish between the legal view of 'unsolicited consumer information' and the more relaxed 'shower s.o. with ads' approach.

the inflationary use of the term doesn't help anyone though.

You've answered your own question really. If it's requested it's not really spam, but I guess calling it "spam" in a thread title alerts casual observers to what the likely content of the thread is so their eyes won't melt in their sockets if they accidentally look at sponsor / site links, refcodes etc.

It's from the Monty Python song

The term spam is derived from the Monty Python SPAM sketch (see video in External Links), set in a cafe where nearly every item on the menu includes SPAM luncheon meat. As the server recites the SPAM-filled menu, a chorus of Viking patrons drowns out all conversations with a song repeating "SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM... lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM," hence "SPAMming" the dialogue. The excessive amount of SPAM mentioned in the sketch is a reference to British rationing during World War II. SPAM was one of the few foods that was widely available.
