View Full Version : Backup Data
Well looking at buying some backup for my PC should have done this years ago but like most left it until your in the shit so to speak. Sitting here on pins don't trust this machine one bit now...
Seen a few webmasters here mention the Maxtor one touch 500GB unit etc.. I'm looking for something as simple as that! Plug & Play. So its noisy in operation and possibly a little slow? Looking at spending around £300 anyone else got any recommendations
Cheers Bluey

I've had the Maxtor one touch for years and I can tell you now I have never had a single problem with it. Fantastic drive. (Touch wood).
However I also have a tiny little Freecom 80GB that cost me more than my 250GB Maxtor but it powers off the USB socket and it is the best drive I ever bought. Same size and thickness as a cigarette case and perfect for mailing out to people. Works with any platform, anywhere.
Cheers Rob for the feedback etc.. need to grab something fast before it's to late. Been looking at the Lacie d2 safe hard drive

Looks a bit to gadgetry! Finger swipe lol, Physical size isn't an issue as it will remain on the desk etc... I think I'll go for the Maxtor

It's an excellent drive, looks fantastic and 400gig for under a hundred can't be all bad (I paid £120 each for mine :( ).

Thats the drives i used to use - all 4 died as they use Maxtors.
Nonuts started this thread http://www.beerandbollocks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9699 a few days ago back up. Damien quoted Maxtors as "The Iceland own label of hard drives." which i have to agree with.

Hi Bluey.
They actually come with a Back-Up software CD-Rom, which to this day I haven't used yet as I use mine for storing rendered footage.
When I get five minutes this afternoon, I'll install the software and give you a shout to let you know what it's like.
All the best.

Cheers much appreciated... Need to get something ordered by this weekend for sure

Hi Bluey.
The back-up software is quite intuitive.
After installing it, it asks you to pick or create a sync folder in which all back-up data must go.
Once I created the sync folder, I manually copied and pasted files & folders into it.
When the sync folder is open, it has two icons at the top, Update Selected & Update All.
I personally clicked on 'Update All' and it checked in seconds, what files & folders had been added or altered since the last time it had been used and updated them with no problems.
The good thing is, anything region outside the 'sync' folder can be used as you would normally use a harddrive.
I hope this is of some use to you.
All the best.

Wow. Thats one cheap external drive - 75pounds for 400gigs...
Havent had a Freecom drive before - is it an independant label - or is it actually one of bigger brands inside? And - whats the experience with them?

Hi Hinc.
I've been using different Freecom external Drives and CD/DVD Writers for years.
I still use an external 60 gig Freecom with back-up software on my personal PC which I bought over six years ago.
Kind regards

I would only recommend Seagate or Western Digital HDDs. Everything else I've tried is just too flakey.
Also, while we're on the subject, don't forget to do a offsite back up of some description. I have a HDD at my brother's with my essential stuff on and DVDs at someone else's place.
You only need to lose all your data once to realise the importance of back ups.
There are two types of people in this world. Those that have had a HDD fail on them, and those that are going to have a HDD fail.
Oh for the Mac users, SupaDupa is a brilliant bit of back up software. Pisses on Retrospect.
This is - of course - until 10.5 comes out and we get Time Machine!

LOL couldn't have put it better myself. Going to compare prices with Amazon and PC World etc.. would be great if i can just pop out and pick one up... Saying that Amazon are pretty quick with delivery
