Just a quickie saw a mate yesterday who to my great disappoinment has gone into business starting a compnay that gets work permits so people can come to the UK.

Basically he needs to back up, I was shocked when he said he didnt, anyhow he currently stores 300g of data and its increasing all the time given the amount of paper work he scans.

Basically looking for advice on a good drive that wont let him down for the job, handle being moved about :)

Any ideas please

Is this one a truly 'one-touch' solution.

I was disappointed with the Freecom one I bought. Says on-touch but it's actually, one-touch > wait 20 mins > click mouse to confirm > wait 20 mins > click mouse to confirm again.

Pain in the arse.

Is the fan noisy too?

hmmm. Maybe two touches, it does ask you if you want to over right a new file, click yes to all and thats that

I think its quiete, but then my PC makes more noise than most so probably covers up the sound

Buffalo do some nice drives from simple 300gb firewire drives to NAS solutions.
Heres my set up for extra back up of back up which gives me 6TB

I've used Lacies in the past and all 4 died within 18 months :(

If this was top trumps for external hard drives you would be the winner so far :(

That's the sorta thing that makes me cum in my pants nowadays (apart from WFH's avatars!)

I'd imagine that would make life a lot easier than the amount of harddrives I have to keep track of. Looks like it's time to upgrade :)

those buffalo drives look amazing :)

I have a couple of maxtor external 320gb drives that I back up all my content/sites/galleries too.

they do the job fine for me.

I also burn most things to dvd over time, just so I have back ups of back ups :)

might sound paranoid but a few years back my mother board blew up taking most of my work/content with it, stupidly at the time I wasn't backing up much, and vowed never to be left in that situation ever, ever again...

I've just bought a cheap Lacie 250Gb external... but it keeps telling me it's full when I try to copy huge (several Gb) files to it.... but it's got nearly 200Gb of space left. Apparently it's formatted to Fat32 - If I reformat it to that other Win XP file system, will that cure it?

I would suggest NTFS, but also I've had two lacies choke on me. And they choked not long oafter starting to do errors like yours is reporting.

Now I use the Western Digital MyBook thing. Very nice.

NTFS - that's the kiddie - I was going to put NTSC but then realised I was being a soppy tart. This freaking Lacie had better not die on me - it's only a couple of weeks old......and it's external casing is designed by Porsche too apparently LOL

Ebay it and get a Seagate or Western Digital. The enclosure is nice with the LaCie's, but as pointed out its a Maxstor inside it. The Iceland own label of hard drives.
