Hi All,

I'm looking for a new host for my site. It's got to be Linux/PHP and have bucket loads of storage and bandwidth.

Should I host in the USA or is country not important (obviously the less red tape the better)

Any recommendations?

Many thanks,

p.

Thanks ChemicalEyes,

How do you judge how much bandwidth you think you'll need? I've blown my 20gb limit with about 60k hits...

Anymore for anymore?

I use oxeo and rocketflow and am ultra happy with both of them.

maybe check them out, I'm unsure how much bandwidth/storage you are talking about tho...

Those guys look pretty cheap - what download speeds do you get from them?

I was with Servage for a while (Germany based, but similar in price/disk space/download limit) but had real problems downloading stuff at any speed. They started out fine, but sometimes I couldn't download my videos at any faster than 512kbps and members were complaining of disconnected downloads :( I guess they are a victim of their own success - beware :twocents:

Servage are evil!!! No cpanel, shitty support and bleugh service in total.

Hostgator - have never ever had an issue with them, as for download speeds I have no clue lol! Ifyou mean stuff from my server then very quickly but I dont know if thats my internet connection or host speed?

They always seem to be around to fix issues that I cause LOL...but that's just cause I'm thick at server stuff...Everyone has their own experiences with different hosts but they are the only ones I've stuck with...

I use Evohosting 12Gb storage, 100Gb bandwidth and the greatest customer service ever, these guys literally fix the problem as you're spotting they exist!

Plus, they had to bring a server down overnight and offered everyone a refund for that month as compensation! I turned it down because theyre so good.

Oh and all for a tenner a month

I used to use hostgator but got a spike in traffic one day and they pulled the plug. Would never use em again.

Is it true that running a .co.uk domain on an American server could cause problems with Search Engines etc?

It was a very big spike but even so them pulling the plug came at the worst possible time. If you get a spike in traffic you should be happy because the hard work is paying off, not furious that some idiot is stopping you from making money.

well exactly, mine site is new so trying to build traffic and hopefully it will take off but for them to do that...even if it was within your bandwidth limit?

I had little to no traffic for most of my time with them then I got listed on the hun, I was about to go over my limit as at the time it was only 80gig, they've only recently upped the BW limits. They quickly made sure I wasn't going to get cut off and were right nice about it - s'pose we all get different experiences huh...

Totally agree that hostgator are very competetive. Also they transfer all your ftp to their server for you.
They have many different plans but a small hitch just lately is my semi dedicated server has gone down 3 or 4 times in the last cpl of weeks...
Im hoping for some compensation but not to worry to much as they do all they can immediatly to get it back up and running.

I have to say if you want cheapness then you cannot beat Dreamhost, I looked at Hostgator but you get a lot more bandwidth with Dreamhost and a ton of freebies and one touch installs. I have used customer support 5 times in 3 months and received replies within the hour each time. I am not saying they should be considered for member and content sites but for blogs and free sites I think you will be hard pressed to beat them.

I find the cost of semi and dedicated servers are brilliant price but the most impressive is the service.. At hostgator they swap your ftp over for you and they have an online chat system 24hrs a day for customer service.
My server went down twice in the last week. not a usual thing but as all serving on semi etc they offered to refund me the whole month and so for 10 mins down time i think this is quite acceptable!
Now thats service with a smile... HOSTGATOR.. definatly an A+
