Can anyone recommend any software (preferably free) for splitting a large MPEG file into smaller chunks of equal size?

Hi BigD.

Did you mean an actual avi/Mpeg file splitter?

Using software like Windows Movie Maker is no good as whatever you export is inferior to the original (unless you export it as an DV avi file which would be no good for you).

Try the following.
Most of them are not free but I think you can download time limited trial versions though to test first.
