In a few years HD will probably become the norm in all aspects of tv/film just as dvd has replaced vhs, cd have replaced vinyl and digital tv is replacing anologue tv.

Corse its needed, the only issues ive seen so far is the last that its not kind to any kind of marks or blemishes however I think its about time us men stopped having such unrealistic views of women created by the whole 'image' mill we have throughout the different media types we have today. I also feel on a biz angle starting to shoot now will safe guard your biz for the future just as SGS suggests.

some folk will always prefer the rough touch . . especially for amateur,
if amateurs start shooting in pro format & lighting it could backfire imo
because comparisons will then be made with sites in the pro arena.
i have tha capacity to shoot HD, but as an "amateur style" shooter
i prefer to let the big boys experiment with HD first before switching.

an example: there's still a market for vintage looking black & white porn
why would this still be the case in a world full of colour cameras ?
Probably because good image quality doesn't mean quality overall
No matter how high res your content is, it still has to hit the spot,

You can do all of that with any footage in a heartbeat. We spend far too much in the studio not to use the latest technology.

I still love to watch a good old fashioned Double penetration German classic.. awful dubbing & pretty awful quality movie making ... but hey the sex is great.

If you shoot in HDV you don't have to format it in HDV for the web.

I can't think of many butts that would be up to close HD inspection on a 42inch high def screen. But thats my problem, the technology won't wait while I breed a bunch of bleemish free models, so i'll just have to deal with it. HDV is 1920x1080 or 1280x720 so your looking at a moving image thats bigger than the sizes most sites use for their still images. The world will just have to get used to the odd spot or wrinkle. Either that or teams of third world outworkers will be retouching each frame. :)

HDV is here, you gotta have it, cause everyone else does, raw image quality does sell, always has always will. SD will look like Laurel and Hardy b&W in about three weeks from now. I've bought the best gear I could from day one, and pretty much every time someone has given me the "But its only porn why bother?" speach. usually my answer is along the lines of. Well it works and I get to buy shiny toys while you get to work in a shop or are a photgrapher that has no work. Hmmm, go figure.

Pornstars are just using it as an excuse for more surgery cause they can.

i just don't think that surfer expectation is quite there yet for smalltime niche ops
How many small sponsors really get pestered for HD by their members ?

doesn't mean you can't still encode to 3CCD sizes . . so in that sense
i understand the argument for "why not HD ?"

but how do you convince webmasters with smaller budgets
currently make decent sales with non-HD content that the extra
investment in gear (including a fat machine to deal with it)
is gonna pay off before the bailiffs arrive on their doorstep ?

most of us will still have to encode with slow connections worldwide in mind
so i see HD as simply a download option for the well connected . . a site
exclusively in HD risks alienating many surfers imho . . some are still on a 56.

Currently HD is not necessary in porn, but and its a big BUT, the way technology is changing, HD will become the standard..... Now that HD cameras are not too much more expensive than 3CCD camera, it makes good business sense to originate in HD... but to edit and publish in normal MPeg or WMV......... As and when technology improves and bandwidth speeds improve the you have the HD originals so you can put them on your site.........

As for 56k surfers - forget them........ any serious porn users are on broadband... so why spend the time and effort in putting up content suitable for 56k?

It's just the inescapable march of technology - keep up or get left behind. As has been metioned previously, you aren't forced to output videos at full HD resolution (indeed hardly anyone does right now) but as average internet connection speeds and monitor resolutions increase, the market for higher resolution porn increases with them. Best to be shooting HD now so you can keep up with these trends.

I'd say at the moment it's far from essential to be shooting HD - you can still make money with standard DV content, but as time goes on we'll see more & more producers switching to HD. If you can't afford the jump to HD now, at least get saving for it.
