Sorry to sound like a grumpy old man, but I was at Clapham Junction Station yesterday (The UK's busiest), and the train tracks had tons of litter on them which I imagine had accumulated over several months and it looked awful.

I approached a member of the station staff - 'not her problem'

Shudder to think what visitors to this country must think...

Same with our Airports - Stansted & Heathrow are third world when compared to Amsterdam Schipol and Co...

Why does no-one give a damn?

LOLOLOL. I was in London last year. I was impressed how clean it was since I left (1991). Much less dog shit on the pavements and way cleaner underground stations. Even my all time favourite station....Tottenham Court Road was "sanitary". Nicer for the Irish gypsies.

Everytime I visited another country I was appauled at how vile england was when I came home. So one day I stopped coming home and now live somewhere where the residents use the bins provided instead of chucking their litter wherever they're standing

London does have a grimey feel to it, maybe because the buildings tend to be old and there's a high density of people. Don't the tourists come for the dirt?

I dont think its as dirty as it once was. But litter is still a problem.

The problem is 50% of the people who live here are scum

I dont agree. We need the government to put litter in the bins for us, because we cant manage it? You just dont see the Spanish, the French, the Germans etc throwing their litter on the floor

Dont forget a lot of litter bins have been removed for 'security' purposes...

Anyone who has a choice and chooses to live there is crackers, the place as you say is dirty, expensive and you also pointed out 'no one gives a shit' dam you may as well go live in Haistings.

50% of the people ANYWHERE are scum and maybe more

London is just bigger so the perception is more scum

London is no worse than anwhere else

Not sure it's that true. People follow a lead, and if the place is dirty, why use the bin? In Barcelona, a city I know well, the main streets are washed daily, that's why it's cleaner than London. Ditto Amsterdam.

If you've got a sandwich wrapper in your hand, can't see any bins, and the streets are littered anyway, there's little incentive to hold onto it for very long.

Yes, but you'll find dirty cities in the US - which is also a low-tax low-spend country. I'm sure I've seen those big street-washing vans in Berlin as well?

I have been to cities all over Europe and even some of the poorest nations and they NEVER look as dirty as London. Village life is the way forward :)

Never noticed to be honest. But there are plenty on the streets, but even if there wasnt, it wouldnt make me throw my sweet wrapper on the floor

Never noticed them. Im not saying they dont exist, its just Ive never noticed them.

Some of us dont believe in rellying on the government for everything. I think you will find most other countries in Europe they have some pride about where they live. I just cant imagine someone in Berlin or Madrid or Vienna throwing their litter on the floor

As for US Cities. Enough said :)

Try drinking heavily and then passing out on Las Ramblas after midnight. It won't be long before you're woken up by a faceful of soapy water.

In the American cities I've been to you could eat your dinner off the pavement. Whereas in London it looks like people already did.

Try it on all you want. I'm a northerner born and bred. You act like Humberside is the sanitation capital of the world. I lived and went to school in Brid, my aunt and uncle were separated and he lived in Beverly, so I went there too. Between Brid and Hastings there is absolutely nothing to distinguish them. Both seaside towns of aproximately the similar size and same social problems, full of day-trippers and holiday makers, amusement arcades and fish and chip wrappers.. Except, no. Hastings has more history, more cultural diversity, and other than being a bit rundown, looks a hell of a lot prettier than Brid. The only thing Brid has going for it is it's got a sandy beach and not a shingle one like Hastings.

For all your claptrap everywhere is crap if you live and look in the right areas. So don't come the high and mighty about "up north". It's grim up north. It's just as dirty and grimey as down south. It's full of just as many manner-less assholes, and suffers exactly the same problems. I've lived all over england and in several other countries too. The one thing I've learned is it's crap everywhere and anywhere if you've got the mindset to find it crap.

So all it comes down to at the end of the day is individual choice and personality. I find it grey and grimey and the attitudes and atmosphere up north to be dull and depressing. That's my personal observation and feeling from living there. Other's mileage may vary, but it very much depends on the individual and what they want and expect from life.

Yes England has some problems compared to other countries. But it's still the country I'd choose to live in at this point in time. Here is cleaner, here is cheaper, here is all very nice, and has some great things going for it, some things I wish would port over to England. But it's boring. It's still very much run by religion. Do you know how irritating it is to go to hospital and have friggin crusifixes hung everywhere? Everything shuts down on the weekend. There's still no Sunday shopping. It's all very insular in a way, hard to describe. Given the choice I'd move back to England/Hastings tomorrow, without a 2nd thought. And that's the plan to do once the kids have flown the nest and we're free to leave.

I would never choose to live up north (England) again.
I would never choose to live in America again.
I wouldn't choose to live here (Austria).
But I would choose to live in the south (England) again.

Of course life doesn't work like that and who knows where the journey may take me and force me to live for a while lol.

But it doesn't change the fact that anywhere and everywhere is crap if it doesn't suit your tastes and temperament.
