I just decided to back up all my sites on DVD and put in my fire proof safe.

Im thinking now that I should have just got another external hard drive.

What you lot think and do?

We run 400GB scsi HDs on the 3 PCs in the office here and they back up onto 2 x LaCie F800 2TB 1 TB (http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10600) externals. We always back up to 2 externals to give us extra security.

Do you keep them away from the premises or in a safe?

I think I may just back up onto an external and put that in a fire proof safe

A couple of Sentry fireproof safes, one in each. Wanted one big safe but just impractical nowadays and the smaller S4635s are just about manageable if you need to move them yourself.

My hosting company runs a daily backup and I backup on 2 external drives monthly.

I put mine on a floppyHe he. :)

I put my stuff onto dvd, then I foget where I leave them.

Its best to back up on both DVD and harddrive.

I used to back up on zip discs (100mb discs at £10 each). Cost too much.

DVD is so cheap now, its great.

DVD would be such a waste of space, I barely fill a floppy with all my stuff.

I use an exturnal, had a major loss of data once due to having to reformat my machine and I vowed never again.

I thought you were joking.

Do you not download stuff of the web.

I love downloading silly mp3 files that I listen to walking the dog.

I have a few pull out hard drives, for ease.

The pull out bay is only £5. You just then drop in any stadered hard drive.

But I also back up to dvd as well.

I try to leave little as I can on drive c. So if it crashes, it will not be a pain to get up and running again.

To be honest, XP has been 99% fine. I was always loading windows 98 back onto my laptop as it crashed all the time.

They also say DVD's (even very cheap ones) are far more reliable than cd's.

I bet some firms still do not do backups.

Why not get a removable usb/firewire drive, small enough to fit in most safes yet the capacity is pretty much up to you, we have usb caddies that normal 3.5" hdd's go into.

Its great if you can do that but using fast externals means that all of the computers in the office can access everything as well as laptops, which is important. Also, with paysites now it means that just the video section is 150gb alone with perhaps another 100gb waiting to go up and that’s just the formatted content.

sorry but I am confused by your statement. Having the drive accesible by any computer plugged into it is a bad thing .. why ?? and as the caddy can take any 3.5" hdd and 200gb drives are now available from retailers ( heck, saw a 3.5" in some junk mail from aldi the other day, 180gb for about £80 i think it was) and the usb2 caddy costing £20 from a local comp shop, i dont seee a down side to buying one fo r current content, one for waiting to go live content .. of course I could have got completely the wrong end of the stick as ive just eaten somer nice butties and I am still in the euphoric state that follows (burp).

We need all computers and laptops to have full access to the back ups :)

Well this system works unless more than one comp wants to access it at the same time .. in that case , its a fight :onguard: with whoever is the biggest, ugliest and so on like that gets it first ( I normally win as Im sooo fat and ugly, i got everyone easily beat !!)
