Its just over two years old.

In truth not been used a lot.

Its 2 year warranty ran out in April.

I sent it in last Friday.

They said it was the motherboard and it was not worth fixing as it would cost £400, and did I want it sending back

I told the chap that it was hardly used much. And if he thinks I will just accept it back he could get stuffed. I said if I had left it on 24 hours a day it should have lasted more than 2 years. I said I only used it to watch the odd DVD on it (7 in total) and probably 5 letters, and no more than 6 hours on the net. I used it on the net while my main pc was busy doing stuff.

So he said he would inform customer care.

I said I think so too.

Not heard anything, so I sent an email today.

I got a reply (see below). It will be interesting to see what they do.

Your complaint has reached my department and we are looking into the
problems that you have described to our technical Support team.

I am sorry for the delay but we feel we must get a full and truthful
picture of the situation which means looking into all of the records
regarding your machine. This will also include the File dates on your
computer which I am sure you understand can take time.

I will be writing to you soon regarding the situation and you should
expect to receive a letter from me in no more than 3 working days from
now.

not quite. why you think server hardware is more expensive than any old PC stuff? especially HDDs break easily, they have an average number of hours they last, the longer you have the system switched on, the sooner they go bust. most definietly regular PC or laptop hardware is not built to run much more than average office use, some 8 hours in one go.

the bad name some makes got is due to fucking kiddies who think they got the top of the range Alenware PC and now got the killer machine and leave it running 24/7, maybe sucking stuff from P2P most of the time, hence having the HDD for example in permanent use.

anyway, your mainboard issue is most likely caused by a production problem already, if you really hardly ever used the laptop. did they say what exactly was broken? a controller only, or the board itself being faulty? Asus for example had serious probs with a series 2 years back.

yeah. my old laptop. the first thing that went was the HDD, it went clicky on me and then died so I punched the screen right through, cut my knuckles and binned it. it was on 24/7 for about 16 months. I fucking hate laptops, give me a big fuck off desk top any day of the week, however legacy it looks.

Basically they do not build them.

They told me to send it in.

Next day the chap said "we believe its the motherboard", so they said they would not bother sending it off to the makers.

Basically what happened was I was watching a DVD and it stopped. it was if the power had turned off. but if this had happened the battery would have taken over. it would not turn on at all. just dead.

But it was not used at all, and not even moved.

I was going to give my dad it as I was not using it.

I suspect she will see if its been used a lot, but it has nothing on it, expect a few word files and avg.

could you not have got a new hard drive?

My last pc was a laptop which I used all day long. I must have had it 4 or 5 years. that died in the end. but I did use it a great deal.

to be honest it was showing its age, and it had no usb slots, so it was getting harder to plug things in it.

it was cheaper just to buy a pc.

I only got the lap top to help me at uni while I was a student nurse. it has dyslexia software on it. its from a disability computer firm, so they may do something about it, as if they got bad press it would be bad for them.

I told them that I would kick up a fuss.
