Stick to the boorbell, it's superb! It would put door to door sales out of business, let alone the Jehovah's witnesses!

That is fundamentally what bill gates wanted to do with email.

I dint think that was a bad idea. Email is fast becoming unusable for alot of people

Charging for email would be a great idea. You could put your friends on a whitelist and everyone else would pay until you aproved them. This would be the death of spam.

Not sure where your going with this.
My sugestion is to get people to text you at your door to prevent sales reps.
Not to charge for emailes.

I have been thinking about this invention from the 40's:

Its clear the down side is people will use false coins or try to break in for the coins, so how about this for an updated idea.
Your customers register a mobile and/email address on your site.
They then put the contact no on there door.
It would be somthing like "to stop unwated pests, text me at 55ld459ty". The last but would be the house no and post code.
Then the persen sending it would be charged £1.
Then a text and/or email would be sent to the person, to say somone is at the door (it would inc the persons mobile no too who sent the text'.
This would be free for the person to sighn up to.
But if they wished they would pay £10 monthy subscription, but would get 50p for every text sent. Ie if you have lots of people coming to your door you can make money from it.
Also usfull for deaf people who can set there mobile to vibrate.

I remember somebody I knew who was very technical, he wanted to get a premium rate number in the "good old days" when BT was in the hands of the government. The woman said that yes it was a good idea but he couldn't have one. He asked why not? She said that if they let ordinary folk have em "everybody would want one".
errr, so?.....
