I doubt the start was ever in sight for UK and Euro webmasters.
Now lets wait to see whats next.
Acacia then 2257 then .xxx
the only real threat i personally can see is .xxx - forcing adult material into the virtual red light district will cut down massively on traffic, all the office hour surfers, all the public (worker) terminals will be blocked. and i also can imagine huge ISPs shutting out .xxx and provide their own adult area for their customers, either by setting it up themselves or outsourcing it for a nice fee or share in the revenue.
but before all that happens, the adult industry would prolly see some nasty fights over big domains, while there will 1000x more smaller fights no one will take notice off really, where the same doamin has different owners for .com .net. biz ... and so on.
and the 60 bucks a domain are the cherry on top of the fun.

Yep theres gonna be some scraping because as you say youve already got the current owners of .net .com etc etc. But who is to say they are even entitled to them. I can see lots of people fighting for those good names, I know I'll be going for a few good ones.
Let the court cases begin :drink:

I think the possibility of court cases may just scupper this - If it was simply a case of dot com owners being given the first chance to purchase .xxx, it would be fine - But where does that leave .net etc? And what about all the other country variants?

people often bring up, what about the people who own other variants. But like I say what about people who dont own any variants at all, they are just as entitled to go for .xxx I for one have a few Im going to go for and I dont own the variants of them :drink:

So a load of webmasters, in effect, could be throttled out of business if dot com domains / net domains are unusable for adult sites?

.xxx is the worste thing to happen to the industry for so many reasons, from some states in the US blocking .xxx by law to ISP's blocking them to be popular. To the huge battles thats going to happen over the names, the $60 price tag etc etc

well, we have a few where we made a "brand" out of them, people are copying the logos and themes as well as keywords, SE traffic often has the dmain names as search term only. people know the sites by name or hearsay. are you saying we wouldn't be entitled to be the first to register the .xxx? if that is so, we'd have to question the whole right of first or right of bigger name as is usually used when someone registers a company's name like the milka.fr case showed (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4348585.stm)

Brands are argued out in court not by registrars, so in my opinion its going to be a first come first served scenario with the owners of the .coms .nets, .anything, all believing they have the right to them, so will people who want good names and dont have any of the above. Like the case you listed it will all end up in court with expensive legal battles.
you seem to support people snatching others' names though?
you seem to support people snatching others' names though?
Im telling you what will happen in my opinion. Why am I supporting snatching other peoples names? Thats whats going to happen.
Anyway who is to same who's name it is?
Take fuck.xxx you think its the god given right for someone who owns fuck.com to own fuck.xxx just because they managed to buy fuck.com first?
What about the person who owns fuck.net and fuck.org and fuck.co.uk what about someone who's never managed to buy fuck.anything, they have less of a right to buy fuck.xxx because other people got there first?
Like it or lump it. Im telling you what everyone else in the webmaster community allready knows. Its going to be a mess with lots of legal battles. Its going to do more damage than 2257 and acacia could ever do.
Plus being as though it looks like an american extention or at least owned by an american company. We over this side of the pond will probably get a right royal fucking. I dont fancy the idea of taking a US company to court in the US over a very generic name.
you are not telling anyone anything new there, if you took the time to read my first post in the thread, it's all mentioned there already.
you do miss the point though.
to take your fuck.com to fuck.xxx example, yes, indeed they should have the right to buy first, as we are talking be a forced move here. if it was all voluntary, fine, then so be it. but forcing a company to give up a well established name and not give it the chance to get it again in the new establishment is wrong.
and indeed we will find the problem with different TLDs in different hands.
take the example to mainstream. let's imagine someone would have forced every business to use .biz instead of .com now. you seriously expect ibm.biz not to be in IBM hands?
so why should it be any different in the adult field? just because we have a shitload of scammings cunts amongst us?

?
Who should have the right to buy it? The person who owns the .com or the person who owns the .net or the person who owns the .co.uk or the person who owns the .org?

The problem is most sex names are generic and not company names like IBM, thats what will cause a free for all.
Plus yes adult does seem to attract people wanting to make a fast buck

So what you arguing about then?
Who should have the right to buy it? The person who owns the .com or the person who owns the .net or the person who owns the .co.uk or the person who owns the .org?
those that made the "brand" of it, or made the name/term known. obviously this will only work with sites that have a certain impact. we'll most likely agree that any old free--teens4-u.com and shit won't be an issue.
i fail to see why making a name in adult is any different to mainstream.
International Business Machines are rather common terms grouped together as well.
i'm also not quite sure what argument adult does seem to attract people wanting to make a fast buck would be? is that the good reason for not acting like other businesses in general?

What you are arguing about? Or just arguing for the sake of it?
Are you saying that people shouldnt buy those names or wont buy those names?
Whether they should or shouldnt they will. If you dont think they will, then we differ on opinion so Ill leave you to argue with yourself.

What a nice fluffy world you live in, where adult webmasters will just let anyone who have the .com buy the .xxx even those who own the .nets will think that is all fine and dandy :drink:
Apart from HF's perfect world, where I live in Im worried, I shall be making sure I get all the .co.uks for my sites just incase I cant get the .xxx's

i asked rather valid questions, which you don't seem to answer for some reason.
we all know it is most likely going to be a nasty thing if .xxx is forced on us. i just do not see why there shouldn't be a sun rise period like with pracrtically every new TLD introduced. when the .eu TLD will officially be avialble by the end of the year, there'll be 4 months where those having a name or brand can register their names first, to avoid such issues as much as possible.
don't you think this should happen especially if we are forced to move to .xxx ?

you clearly missed the point. when or where exctly did i say it won't happen?
why is it there seems to be a general problem in this thread to discuss something without blocking the mind when it comes to different options?

That would be good if it was to happen, is that what you think will happen? I have no idea if that will or not, but I suspect that it wont. We will see
