http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series

Star Trek is a science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry and aired from September 8, 1966 through June 3, 1969, with a total of 79 episodes aired and 80 episodes produced. Although cancelled after its relatively short run, the program was placed in syndication, where it spawned a strong fan following. The success of the program was followed by five additional television series and ten theatrical movies. The Guinness Book of Records lists it as having the largest number of spinoffs. Though the show was released as and is offically titled simply Star Trek, it has acquired the retronym Star Trek: The Original Series (sometimes shortened to ST:TOS or TOS), in order to distinguish this first series from the sequels which followed (all of which comprise the Star Trek universe or franchise).

Set in the 23rd century, Star Trek follows the adventures of the starship Enterprise and her crew, led by William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy portraying his executive officer, Mr. Spock. Shatner's voiceover at the beginning of each episode—with the exceptions of both pilots, "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before"—stated the ship's purpose:

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.
When Star Trek debuted on NBC in 1966, it was not successful; ratings were low and advertising revenue was lackluster. During the show's second season, the threat of cancellation loomed. The show's devoted fanbase conducted an unprecedented letter-writing campaign, petitioning NBC to keep the show on the air. The fans succeeded in gaining a third season, however NBC moved the show to 10 P.M. on Fridays (the 'Death Slot', so named because relatively few people watch television at that time), and ratings remained poor. The series was cancelled at the end of its third season.

I'm still struggling with the thought that next year is the Next Gen's 20th anniversary.

I agree that the original Star Trek has stood up to the passage of time quite well. Personnaly though I thought the next generation the best. It was a bit more cerebral than the original and Patrick Stewart brought his particular brand of gravitas to the role. I understand that some episodes were used in company training courses as model examples of team building, group bonding, collective problem solving and all that jazz. Sooo 80's.

I hate all Sci Fi. To me its just drivel.

But I must admit the original star treck was OK. The thing I liked about it, was the aliens could be anything. From orange clouds, to sounds, spirits. Rocks....anything. Seems these days all the aliens are like humans. Two Legs two arms, blood, brains etc. Just with a green fury noses or some such nonsense

The next gen really got going around seasons 3-6, the first two were good but not great, the last was too influenced by Rick Berman for my liking. The good days of star trek died with Gene Roddenbery.

It's actually Star Treks 40th Anniversary this week.

This weekend, in the States, they are showing the original series, from episode one which has been digitally remastered with new CGI special effects, 5.1 dolby digital sound, etc.

Personally I think they should do that to all the old episodes of Doctor Who (I've been a closet Whovian for years, now it's ok to come out).

:)

Noooooo , they should be left well alone, wobbly sets and all. Tom Baker was the best Doctor of the lot imo. Scariest storyline for me was (and apologies for not remembering the title) set in some woodlands, involved mummys with big square chests and egyptian sarcophigi. Not having a telly I haven't seen any of the new series but enjoy listening to the BBC7 repeats of the radio show with Paul McGann (?)

Geeky technical point - they don't, the Universal Translator converts the alien languages into English :D

The episode you're refering to is 'Pyramids Of Mars' and you're right about Tom Baker being the best. My daughter loves the new series but if I put on any of the old episodes, she sits there laughing at it.

Jesus, dont you guys know nothing.. They use universal translators, its a device you stick in your ear. I have one. its pretty cool, you can get them on Ebay. Very handy when you meet a Ferengi trying to ply you the latest DVD's of the girls from Raisa.

"Ok so that'll be 2 bars of latinum, ... no I'll give you 1 bar .... ok 1 bar 5 strips. ... Done Deal."

They have great porn on Raisa.

That's funny, I was sure Danbrusca and I dealt with that one earlier.

By the way, in Dr Who it's the tardis that does the translation.
