Several people have been injured after explosions on the Underground network and a double-decker bus in London.
A police spokesman said there were "quite a large number of casualties" at Aldgate Tube Station.
And Scotland Yard confirmed one of several reports of explosions on buses in the city - in Tavistock Place - but said the cause was not yet known.
One caller to BBC Five said his friend had seen "the bus ripped open like a can of sardines and bodies everywhere".
Number 10 said it was "still unsure" whether the explosions were a terrorist attack and although casualties were reported, no further details were yet available.
Ministers are meeting to clarify the situation and the government will make a statement later, Leader of the House Geoff Hoon told the Commons.
PA also quoted union officials as saying sources had told them there had been at least one explosive device on the Underground.
British Transport Police said incidents took place at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square stations.
Scotland Yard confirmed they were assisting with a "major incident" and said there were casualties.
Hospitals have said they are no longer accepting non-emergency cases, BBC Five Live reported.
The National Grid, which supplies power to the Underground, said there had been no problems with its system which could have contributed to the incidents.
'Screaming and crying'
Jacqui Head, from BBC News, who had just left King's Cross station on a Piccadilly Line train as an explosion happened, said: "Everything was normal. Suddenly there was a massive bang, the train jolted.
"There was immediately smoke everywhere and it was hot and everybody panicked. People started screaming and crying."
The train was kept in the tunnel for 20 minutes and no announcement was made to explain the delay to passengers, she added.
Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes, near Kings Cross, told Five Live: "My only thought in the midst of all this confusion is that after the celebration of yesterday (for the Olympic 2012 London success) for people to be evil enough - if it is the intentional causing of death and injury - and think that they can justify this in any circumstances is completely unacceptable."
London Fire Brigade said four crews were at Liverpool Street and more were on their way.
Another passenger, who had left the Tube at Fenchurch Street Station, and walked to Aldgate East, told BBC Five Live that he saw injured people.
"As I walked through the bus station I could see people lying on the ground, black, as if they'd been covered in smoke. There were about three or four people on the floor being treated."
Eyewitness Paul Woloszyn from BBC News, who was at Blackhorse Road station on the Victoria Line, said: "We were told there was a bomb at Liverpool Street station.
"I was on the Tube, and they stopped the train and told everyone to get off and evacuate the station."
He said staff had said the entire Tube network had been affected, and leaflets had been handed out with details of alternative bus routes.
Another eyewitness, Dorothy Molloy, had been on a Tube train at King's Cross and said "staff just chucked everyone out of the station".
She said staff there had not given any details, but she said two passengers she had spoken to had said they had received messages saying there had been bombs.
"People didn't really know what was going on, they were just huffing and puffing and saying how annoying it was," she said.
"People don't seem to be panicked, but there's so many police and ambulances coming into the areas. People are just concerned, and some are just annoyed at the delay."

Share prices have dropped across Europe after a number of blasts rocked tube stations and buses across London.
The UK's benchmark FTSE 100 share index tumbled 105.92 points, or 3%, to 5,072. In France, Germany, Holland and Spain indexes all declined more than 2.5%.
The pound also dipped, while many investors sought safety in the Swiss franc and commodities such as gold. The price of crude oil dropped in London.
City firms including Deutsche Bank and the London Clearing House evacuated.
City-wide problem
Several people have been injured after explosions on the Underground network and a double-decker bus in London.
British Transport Police said some of the power surges had caused explosions.
A police spokesman said there were "quite a large number of casualties" at Aldgate Tube Station.
"There is always a bit of a scare when these kinds of incidents happen, especially after the Olympics announcement yesterday," one trader said.
"Everyone is already a bit worried today about the high oil price, there's a bit of uncertainty, the G8 is on today, so there's a bit of profit taking."
The shockwaves were felt as far away as South Africa, where shares dropped more than 1.8%.
"This is all on the back on the London underground incidents, and particularly the bus blast," said one Johannesburg trader.
"The market is getting pretty panicked. It's the uncertainty that is worrying everyone."

I would not worry.
It sounds that most people have just got minor injurious.
Only 2 deaths.
I suspect she will be ok.
Sounds more like the bombs were designed to shut down London rather than kill.

Why no footage of them arriving at hospital?
I just doesn't seem real to me, but maybe I just don't believe anything I see on the TV.
There aren't many pictures of anything, normally you will see pictures of smoke coming from the tube, injured people, people arriving at hospital and they would be talking to untold eye witnesses.
I suppose they woildn't take an excercise this far though, so you can all say I'm talking bollocks :takethat:

It will cost London millions each day.
It will also loose millions this year from tourists.
Also if the tube itself has been damaged.

Sounds like many got injured from getting out of the tubs in panic (such as getting cuts as they climbed through broken glass windows) rather than from the bombs.
No children reported injured.

COPS FOIL AL-QAEDA DIRTY BOMB OUTRAGE
Apr 17 2005
Plot to devastate General Election
Exclusive By Barry Wigmore And Euan Stretch
POLICE have foiled an al-Qaeda plot to bring chaos to the General Election with a radioactive "dirty bomb".
They believe targets included Westminster Abbey, the Heathrow Express, the London Underground, pubs, railway stations and sports stadiums. An un-named synagogue was mentioned - and so was the idea of hijacking a petrol tanker to smash it into a building.
A dirty bomb is radioactive material wrapped around a core of high explosive. It would not lead to a nuclear explosion, but could turn a large area of a town into a radioactive wasteland for decades.
The plot was discovered as a result of close co-operation between British, American, and Pakistani security services and a year-long surveillance operation.
American reports say British police found a cache of household smoke detectors which it is believed terrorists wanted to cannibalise for the radioactive chemical americium-241 that they contain.
Terrorism experts say that exploding even a small amount of radioactive material in a crowded underground station or sports stadium would trigger sensitive radiation sensors, causing panic and probably many deaths in the crowds and long-lasting contamination.
The bomb plan was just one of several plots uncovered by the investigation.
Former US Attorney General John Ashcroft referred to it in a recent interview with Newsweek magazine.
-METROPOLITAN Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair today called for new laws and technology like ID cards to help track terror suspects.

Armed police in Bournemouth is not a good sign, I dont doubt there may or may not be more attacks, I would be supprised though if it was anything bigger, also these attacks where times perfectly, I would think other bombs would have gone off at the same time. But time will tell

I've seen some footage of the injured arriving at hospitals on the BBC, and it wasn't nice. They were pumping away some poor badly burnt guys chest frantically.
So London finally gets hit. Happy now George and Tony?
Still, when we get our ID cards that sort of thing won't happen. Or if it does then we can use the cards to help dig out the hundreds of people still trapped on trains underground.
I'm so angry and sad and sickened. That's the city I grew up in. Nan and Grandad used to live on Tavistock Square, I used to get off the tube in Aldgate East every day to get to work. I hope everyone hears from friends/relatives in London that they're safe.

There have been small amounts of armed police walking around Bournemouth for a few years now, can't say I've ever seen more than 10 or so and I know the local police, it just seems like those 10 turned into a 100 and their hand guns all turned into machine guns.
I'm sure there wouldn't be any bigger attacks as like you said that really wouldn't make any sense...but am waiting to see if anything else happens when rush hour hits again later on today.
