Hosting to the UK?
OK lets assume the legals were all in place and you could move your server or virtual account to a UK provider would you do so?
I got some spam through and had a look as I was curious, things seemed OK other then the price :(
Is it just another case of rip off Britain?
Ive spoken to UK hosts, they have no problem hosting porn, last one I spoke to had a brilliant set up. I talked to him about a dedicated account. The price was OK, I asked him about bandwith, he said it was fully inclusive of unlimited bandwith, I said theres no such thing, he said there was, and they had it. I said I use 10-15mpbs a month. He said, OK, let me ask. Then came back and said the bandwith would be £1.50/gig
Every so often I have a chuckle so myself about it to this day :drink:

Why do you think we pay more for our BW here?

Yes, like most if everything was sorted.. but UK prices are no competition and I can't them being so in the near future.

Im not 100% sure, but I think its a mixture of both rip off Britain and the cost from the upstream providers

So it's unlimited as long as you don't use any, oh I get it now :takethat:

Not many hosting companies seem to grasp the meaning of "unlimited"
Reminds me of the time when unlimited 0800 dial-up was the big thing, except there logic was that it didn't mean you could use it 24/7, it meant you could dial-up as often as you wanted.

About 6-8 months ago :drink:

Given the choice I would, I was hoping to use UKGuru's hosting, but his servers are in the US, tho he's expecting to set one up in London sometime soon.
So I've gone with a Dutch bunch, 50gb for 30 euro with excess at 0.25 euro.
Which I thought was damn cheap for excess.

hmm, unlimited dial up, i remember when BT moved me and all the other heavy usage accounts to a different phone number that would ring engaged for most of the time.. i.e fuck off we don't want your business any more
As for the hosting, i just think the UK isn't as geared up as the states and
the rest of europe..

Has there ever been any sort of uk webmasters union or representation?
I don't think there has ever been a place where a large amount of webmaster regularly gather together - Enough to go to the same hosting company and maybe make a good deal -
Now this board is picking up pace and a few uk'ers are beginning to get together, perhaps that is something on the cards -
However - You will have vat to contend with - So however good the price will be, the chances are it would never be good enough because of the tax.

So what WOULD be an attractive price including VAT for hosting?

I had my own servers shipped to Amsterdam and the bandwidth cost alone was 25% more than I pay now -
Bandwidth costs have fallen in the usa - I think it pays to check for "specials" regularly - Especially with your own hosting company - If they are offering new clients a better deal than you are on, let them know you want the same deal!
So what WOULD be an attractive price including VAT for hosting?
well for me anything better than what Im paying, if the support was top notch, that said it would have to be a serious offer for me to move hosting companies
