Just think, in a few years time, they will have dvd's that will hold more than that.
I have an old 486 with about 300 mb hard drive. At the time it was huge.

Yes. Pity they are a few years off. :(

The speed and costs, it may not be that long.
The backup server has just recalculated 10 minutes 35 seconds... Oh FUCK! :(

I don't think I've ever seen you swear so much!
you could get a tape backup?

you could get a tape backup?
But that would be fast, easy and hassle-free. What's the point of that?
We already have an automated system where everything is backed up onto 2 raid 5 file servers twice a week but had to change a few things in the office here yesterday so the backup had to be delayed and we hope to get down to the air race at Longleat at the weekend so I wasnt going to be here after it was set back up again.
I would rather sit here and watch things backup for several hours than have a data loss and only have an out of date backup. ;)
What are you using to back up to?

2 x Buffalo raids.

2 x Buffalo raids.
Have you seen these:
http://storage.vspl.co.uk/405u.html
They're not NAS ... but can connect by USB2 to the file server. 5 bays x 750 gb, at RAID5 you should be able to get just shy of 3TB on one unit.
I've not thought to use them as backup - we've got a tape autoloader - but I reckon they'd be quicker than the Buffalo's with gbit ethernet?

That looks good and thanks I will check it out. :)
We always back up x 2 and there has been a couple of things worrying me about the Buffalo's over the last few weeks.

I bought a Buffalo NAS late last year and it kept restarting for no reason. It would take ages to start up, as it would do a disk check. Contacted Buffalo and they suggested updating the firmware. I never really trusted it after that and stopped using it.
There's something similar to the Buffalo by Thecus - http://www.thecus.com/products_index.php - not sure what the latest version is like in terms of speed, but their older version is a little slow.

At least your not in the middle of a 90 hour (and still running) file recovery :)
Thanks to JoeA all files are being saved :cheers2:

90 hour??? Is it working?

Yes similar experience here plus using 2 together is a royal pain.

Once thats done I would get a backup regime in place asap. :)

Finally something Im qualified to comment on :)
Disk to disk backup is a good option especially for speed and ease of restores (though with the current speed of tape its not always faster as most people think) but it is NOT a suitable replacement for tape unless the drives are offsite. Also with disk you generally lose the archive ability that you get with tape so if you delete or change a file you dont get the ability to restore to previous versions unless you have a huge amount of disk space. For the guys who are doing this for a living I would suggest investing in a good tape drive or autoloader and backup software and doing it properly - backups are like insurance, you hope you never need it but when you do you are fucking glad you did!

I am very old fashioned when it comes to backups. We *always* backup times 2 and the backup drives are kept off site.

Believe me there is nothing wrong with being old fashioned with it comes to backups! I could tell you some horror stories about the backup goings ons in some of the UK biggest companies that would make your eyes water lol

Back in the days before HDs we lost a load of stuff when a plug was pulled out so that the hoover could be plugged in. :(
The most important lesson to ever be learned in backups is that your backups are nothing - its your restores that matter! Test them and test them regularly, properly and fully cos you really dont want to find out that you have been doing them wrong when the shit hits and fan which happens to so many companies......

This is where I am even more old fashioned. I don't use any backup software, we hard-copy complete domains, directories and files over and even after that we still backup work-in-progress and complete video libraries onto separate external single HDs (times 2) too.
