View Full Version : Carbon Neutral - is this for real?!
http://www.carbonneutral.com/
so let me get this strsight, you pay them and they plant some trees and then the environment is saved?!
does your tree write to you to tell you how its doing?
Haha there was one of those similar sites on the radio down here other day. It had an online calculator and it shows you your anual carbon emissions, and works out what that = in $ offset fee.
You then pay those plonks the fee and they use it to "prevent" future carbon emissions by planting trees and crap like that. Don't worry about trying to stop the source of the emissions, naturally that would be anti-productive in a business sence. :)

Why is it hypocritical to offset your environmental impact?
On the whole, people don't want a fucked planet, but they also don't want to go & live in caves, so if there's a way to have a healthy environment and still enjoy modern luxuries, how is that a bad thing?
I know what I am gonna get everyone for christmass now I am gonna buy them some carbon karma!

because its all bollocks
who has absolute proof that carbon emmisions are causing global warming?
Global warming is happening, but who can say its not the planet evolving...its done it before.. many times
Some psudo intellects think its cool to jump on a bandwagon to try and profit from being "Carbon Neutral" when their business is more likely than not completly uneeded on a global scale anyway...

If the experts are right and emmisions are causing global warming and we cut emmisions and it stops it then thats a good thing
If the experts are wrong and emmisions are not causing global warming and we cut emmisions and all it meens is less emmisions, thats not a bad thing
If the experts are right and emmisions are causing global warming and we do nothing. We are all fucked
I go for we do something just in case

My Mrs bought me this book recently since I got into a "Greener Lifestyle" after watching "It's not easy being green" on bbc 2 earlier in the year.

I've not turned into a Hippy or anything, but I've incorporated many of the suggestions in the book into my daily life without making any major changes to the way my family and I lives, but at least now I know I'm doing my bit towards reducing the carbon footprint of our household.
Like Johnny says, whether it makes a difference or not, at least I'm doing my bit "Just In Case" :)
Cheers

Kermit?
Anyway, its all fine being green but whats the point when america just ignores the problem? they are the biggest pollutant on this planet.

Even gool 'ol boy George Bush admitted global warming exists. If the biggest oil pirate on earth says its for real, I think we can safely assume it's a fact.
I am of the depressing opinion that things need to get a *lot* worse before enough people care strongly enough to do anything about it, and for their actions to have a significant effect. Of course by then it will probably be too late.

That's the most sensible thing I've heard said about this whole issue. I'll remember that one.
The only niggle I've got with it is that those nations that do something about it i.e. in Europe will be economically held back compared with countries that don't like USA, China, India etc.

We'll be economically held back if half of London ends up underwater as well ;)

Oh I don't know. The huge investment required for re-location and reconstruction would do wonders for the economy. :) We could move London to higher ground. Scotland perhaps, or Wales.
