Ouch i'm pretty sure that means that windows has corrupted and needs to be repaired. When it happened to us, we had to format and start from scratch but there are a few things you can try first which involve making a boot disc to get into windows to try and repair it...

Hi JT,
I had exactly this problem last month. There is a solution to this if you have a boot up disk.
Here's a forum post about it http://www.anetforums.com/posts.aspx?ThreadIndex=10606
My soloution was to dump my old computer 'cause I didn't have a disc and bought another as needed a new PC anyway. Still, it was a pain in the ass, fekin' 'puters!
Found this.

Not sure I have the original XP disk, as this is my third oldest puter. Its running an older version of XP. Will a newer version of XP CD be any use?

Happened to me once as well :(
I'd say its fuckered mate. Either re-install or go and buy a new one and stick the old drive in as a slave and you should be able to salvage most files.

You mean you're running service pack 1?

Not sure JT but what have you go to lose. May need a complete reinstall of XP if it does not work. Good luck.
you dont have a disk in one of the drives do you?

It has no files I need or want. Its my third oldest computer and I havnt used it for about 6 months.
But for reasons I wont bore you all with, I need it working. Im not sure if I even have the xp disk, will any xp disk be ok?

No checked that :(

I havnt installed an operating system since windows 3.11 :(
i think thats the boot stuff so its fucked if you can boot it off XP install disk you maybe able to reinstall over the top and keep your files
I would say chances are the drive is fucked though
A similar thing happened on one of my boxes lat week. I tried booting up from the Windows XP cd and then selecting the repair option, but that didn't work.
Luckily, I had a spare drive lying around, so stuck that in and installed the OS onto that. I then connected the fucked drive as a slave and was able to copy over the data. :)

you could try doing a roll back, but you will have to google it for the procedure as I would normally suggest a format when anything that serious comes along. Anything other than that is usually only going to kick you twice as hard some time (often not very much) further down the road.

What's happened is your master table file has become so fragmented it's now lost a couple of dll files.
If you manage to fix it you'll be a miracle worker!
The usual course of action is to reformat and use a utility like diskeeper to automatically increase the size of your master table file (windows always assumes you are on a small hdd).
It may well be possible to instal another hdd pinned as a 'master ide device' and repin your existing hdd as a 'slave' on the same ide channel then install a new os on the new master C disk and recover your files from your old drive which would then show up as your D drive; but this does not always work, especially if the two disks have a different file structure viz: fat16,fat32 or NTFS al la winxp.
Either way, increasing the size of your mft will stop this happening again.
Hope this helps

It might have done, if I knew what you was talking about :)
I re installed windows XP, then had to find and reinstall all the drivers. All working now, after about 4 hours off cunting around

first thing I normally do before doing anything drastic like a reformat is system restore...where you restore your computer to a certain date when you know it was running fine, obviously it depends on what the problem your pc has but I find it clears whatever it was! and you don't usually lose any saved files either :)
