Prime Minister Tony Blair is set to get the go-ahead later this month for two "Blair Force One" planes to fly him on official trips, the BBC has learned.

One is likely to be a long-haul plane with 70 seats, while a 15-seater jet will be ordered for shorter flights, BBC correspondent James Hardy says.
Since 1944 US presidents have had their own plane, known as Air Force One.
Until now the PM has chartered planes or used the ageing Queen's Flight to take him on official business.
The planes will not be bought outright, but taken on a long lease.
They are expected to cost around £12.3m a year - about £2.7m more than the current arrangement.

The Royal Family will also have use of the new aircraft. Like government departments, they will pay the full cost of travel - a similar arrangement to chartering and not just fuel and staffing costs.
The long-haul plane, which is likely to be wide-bodied, with a separate VIP area and kitted out for modern communications, will be used in place of the British Airways 777 currently chartered by Downing Street.
US presidents have had their own planes since 1944 when Franklin Roosevelt started using the "Sacred Cow".
The "Air Force One" call sign was used in the 1950s for the presidential plane but it was President Kennedy's aircraft which first made the name popular. President Bush uses two Boeing 747-200B planes with the "Air Force One" tag.

It's worth noting that all these people are being interviwed because the copper in charge wants to debunk as many conspiracy theories as possible.

Yes, we are not a 3rd world country and these things are important.

Will he ever fly with his new toy - or has he to leave his job just before the planes will be delivered?

Don't really see what the issue is. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

But, I know what will happen if labour loose the next election, the new PM will sell of the Jet's because he's just a 'normal guy' who'd rather slum it in catle class than spend money fule guzling jets.

Then 2 years later will buy him self 4 jets.

Would be hard to sell it if it's based on a long leased contract as written before?!?

It's a cheap way to impress foreign leaders. The expensive way is to invade a foreign country. I prefer the cheap way.

Well I am with him on that one (about the only thing I might add) you would never get me on an Easyjet plane either. :)

The Royal Yacht should never have been scrapped, the amount of business done on that boat will have far outstripped the cost of running something that was an icon for Britain.

Bring back Concorde for Tony! OK, perhaps not... but thats another perceived British iconic thing that fell by the wayside.
