Are there any browsers in fairly common usage that have a problem displaying frames these days?

No, but you shouldn't use them anyway. They have no positive features whatsoever.

No they don't.

Frames can't do anything that CSS and tables can't.

I've got this funky little expanding menu script - can I put that in a CSS?

Yes you can. Its more reliable.

Big problem with frames is Search Engines have difficulty reading them.

Don't want search engine reading these frames - they're in the members area :)

are there any other problems with frames other than search engines not reading them?

frames frames frames.. eugh frames are bad...

They take longer to load pages than a good css based layout. not to mention the hassles people have trying to bookmark a page in a frame. Basically frames are bad bad bad...

members area search engine script... do i qualify as one of these clever coding people ? ;)

I dont think your members will love you for adding frames. It makes the navigation, bookmarking and viewing less flexible and pleasureable (people get lost in them, content shows up in silly ways in frames, they cant bookmark the goodies properly etc) - and all for no reason with perfectly capable alternatives.

I use iframes from time to time, and I know that imlive and camcontacts scripts break out of the page and use the full window.

also, why don't you want the search engines spiders on your members' area? frequency of updating content is something google loves. the more often you update, the better.

just a thought.
