One program I recommend is AVG. You can download a free version of this which is excellent. Keep checking at least once a week for updates. See www.grisoft.com.

I use mcafee on my desk top and avg on my lap top. avg is a great program and its free, I pay for Mcafee but dont think its any better

I had AVG pro on my other system but now on my laptop I have McAfee. I don't like McAfee as much as AVG and it's really slow when scanning.

I also use Zone Alarm firewall :)

although many curse it, i still stick with Norton. funnily enough it's the only one that never let me down in all the years, and i trioed quite some different ones on my hunt for the best solution - i blame the cursing on the same issues mayn seem to have with Win XP. the problem is most likely located between chair and keyboard.

supposedly Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/) stuff is great, i might give that one a whirl at some point.

snap - very good virus checker.

I don't like norton at all, takes over too much of your system

bitdefender ::: I also pay for registry mechanic, ad-aware SE professional, and a squared 2 to keep things running o.k.

i use nortons 2005 and i let it scan at 5am when I'm in bed so it doesnt hog my resources too bad when I'm using it :)
