Why do some people prefer to host galleries themselves rather than adding a link to free hosted ones?

Surly it costs you more in bandwidth.

i've done it before ... with permission ... to tweak them for better ctr and to seo them up. Plus you get control over the 404 etc. Can work ok.

care to elaborate why copying any FHG onto your own server would take less bandwith than own galleries?

Most TGPs also don't accept hosted galleries so you have to add them you your own server
