The Nyxem virus is programmed to delete Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files, unless infected users clean up their systems. But security firm F-Secure has said that some users have already lost important files because the clock time on their PC is wrong.
Mikko Hyppönen, director of F-Secure, said in a blog posting: "If you're infected and your clock is not set right, things could start to happen at any time. We've already received first reports from users who've had files on their system overwritten by the worm."
All the major anti-virus vendors have released patches for Nyxem but F-Secure estimates that thousands of PCs are still infected. Companies could also be hit by a traffic spike as the virus emails copies of itself to contacts in a user's address book.
The virus, which is also known as MyWife, Blackworm, Kama Sutra, Grew and CME-24, first appeared on 16 January. It arrives in emails with attachments claiming to be porn videos and pictures."
