View Full Version : Video editing - Mac vs PC

I've used both Mac and PC to edit video and find both platforms very capable with the right software / hardware. Is there any technical reason to go for one over the other? I'm talking about fairly low end stuff here, ie one of the cheaper Avid systems vs a G5 with Final Cut.

I think XP has meant that the PC is good for editing.
But I think (if I had the cash) I would use a mac for vid editing only.
But, it depends what you are doing.
PC all of the way now. It was different a few years back but now a *dedicated* and *purpose built* PC video editing suite is as good as it gets.
I must say I haven't found the right tools to handle videos and specially all the formats of the videos on a Mac. So my G4 and old G3 are standing around here just to look good :)
yeah i use i pc to edited videos now but easier then using the mac :)

How dedicated and purpose built a PC are we talking though? I've seen some very nice Avid machines for £15,000 but we need 2 systems for half that price.

What do you want to do on the Mac that you can't? I used to use G4s a while back and we used Cleaner (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=5562025&siteID=123112) for video format conversions.

A dual Pentium at 3.2 or 3.4Ghz will do a good job. Of course with a 2 or 4 channel for the disk drives.
Well, I usually need only to cut videos and render them to differen formats. Sometimes a bit of editing, but not to much
Look at professional edit suites.
All mac (exageration, but all the ones I have been in are mac-based)
We run 10 suites with FCP

I think it basically comes down to personal preference doesnt it? The new G5s seem to rate very well against Pentiums for speed, and other than that it just seems to come down to what software you prefer. Unless I'm missing something...

The new G5s suck monkey balls compared to the new dualcore Intel iMacs. Miles slower!
but of course, there is a degree of personal preference but it's the fact that the pros - who don't have to spend the cash out of their own pocket - seem to choose macs that is the point to me.
As to them, it's not their budget, and they choose macs. Wonder why it's an industry standard in video editing, sound editing etc but has a tiny market share everywhere else.

But if you do plan on doing dvd's, it may work out far cheaper and much better to get a pro in to edit the films.
I had a mate (who is now a school teacher) who was a wizz at vid editiing. He did it on a pc, but had all the softwear you could think of.
He did some realy amazing things.

Sorry for the delay. Just back here.
Got this link from here a while back: HERE (http://www.sirentechnology.co.uk/pages/products/categories/systems/main.htm)
Or I know people using a set up from these guys here too: HERE (http://www.sub.co.uk/)
If its for web and DVDs and you already use PCs I would never go with a Mac. Use what you know, its just good business sense and you don't have 3 months to learn new stuff when you could be sitting on a beach somewhere instead?

Yup, went for 2 shiny new quad core G5s with 23" HD displays. I have one set up next to me. It's nice. Very nice.
Although... Final Cut requires an AGP video card, and these cunting machines have PCI cards. So they are both going back tomorrow and I am kicking off bigstyle. The so-called expert in the shop said I'd be fine with the video card in the machine. What a cunt eh?

True, although I worked with Macs for 3 years before I did my deal with the man downstairs & got into porn, so I can handle PC or Mac really.

Haha, I'm a cunt as well. Final Cut needed an update to recognise the PCI card. The cunt in the shop should have told me that though!

Yeah. Foolish of me to assume that a dedicated Apple store would have staff any more clued up than the morons in Dixons really. I might try taking a blank disc in & asking if they can put the internet on it for me....

noone with a decent understanding of the matter will work for a salesperson's wages. enough freelancing work out there in peddling stuff yourself and selling services with it.
While we're on this subject, somthing I've been meaning to ask, does anyone know any good Premiere tutorials?

The Premier Bible (through Amazon) is excellent and well worth the money.
Cheers SGS, I'll go take a look on Amazon

Hello stranger!
Yeah, wrong of me to assume that Apple might employ someone who knew their stuff. They actually have people in the shop with "genius" status, as well as the regular sales guys. I guess they are just more used to selling toys than tools - it's an iPod shop at the end of the day.
no stranger at all, ICQ is up 15 hours a day and more ;)
depending on who owns the store, they may also be slightly demotvated. it seems that Apple has decided to open own huge stores more and more, not taking into account exisiting independent shops that are already there. if you know your job is basically gone in a few months, it mightkinda piss you off.
