To me, with ALL the free (non bbc stations) as well as pay stations, I do not feel I should be forced to pay for stations that I may not watch. Its woprse when I see the HUGE wages they give to talentless people.

I don't mind at all provinding it stays ad free.
The fee is for radio stations as well (online included).
What pisses me off most is being bombarded with 20mins of ads every hour watching Sky despite paying over £50 per month.

Yes but in truth all except radio 4 and bbc 7 have been done much better by comercial stations.
Are adverts that big a problem?
Why have so many BBC TV stations. Surly just 1 BBC station would be enough.
If you look at the start of BBC shows, many are not made by the BBC but private firms. So basicly these shows can be put onto other stations.
Yes, the bbc website is good, but this could be funded in other ways.
What bugs me most is that the BBC sells TV shows we paid for to other countries. Plus also sells us the shows again back on DVD. Surly if I paid for the licence fee, I own the show, so why do I have to pay for the DVD?
It also seems that if your in the USA you get the creme of the BBC free.

What makes it worse is that the ad volume levels are higher than the programs themselves. Fucking annoying when in bed half asleep.

I agree with that, channel 5 are really bad for doing that, but to the original question
Is it too much or not...
I hardly watch tv, let alone bbc .. in fact the only one that I can say I enjoy watching are top gear and life on mars .. but then again, would they even exist without the funds .... The hardest thing to accept is the amount of the rise in percent compared to the rises that peoples wages have risen by is not even similar ... and the fact I pay for terry fekin wogan !!

There are in total about 5 good programmes through out the lot of the BBC and we ALL are suposed to pay that (we pay more for colour televisions and black and whites) I think they have gone to it all wrong, the price keeps going up and some people just cant afford it, or the sky bills. How old are they? as at a certain age they get it free.
One interesting thought is that what will hapen if we go 100% digital. You see by rights those who pay for the bbc should get a card to plug into there digital box, thus those who do not want the bbc should not have to pay for it.

I know that I will get lots of shit with it that I dont need, thats the same If I was to buy from PC world. But I know that dell laptops are really good and their customer service (for people like me who dont know shit) is really good...Unlike comet who take your goods and you dont see them for 3 months...and they dont provide replacements...
Considering what I was looking for, and reviewing all the options dell was my best choice...Its sort of the right spec I wanted and for a good price. End of the day I wouldnt buy one from comet. I WONT be buying from Ebay...PCworld is far too overpriced as is currys and Im all out of options.
There are those sites that no one ever heres of till you look up googlebut I dont like to try things out that cost a lot of money in the hope that something doesnt go wrong.
If you have another suggestion i'd love to hear it otherwise Im stuck with dell

Iv'e had mine for a year now and it's been sweet as a nut. I did have a problem with the screen, it died, but they collected and put a new screen and returned within days.
Any shit that is on there can be dealt with by a format, but I don't think there was much crap on here that I don't use.
I'm happy and if my laptop dies tomorrow, I hope I'm not tempting fate, I would but from dell again.

Dell are a good name.
The only thinmg that bugs me about Dell is that you go to there site, and think, cool a cheap pc.
Then as you order it, you find that you need to order extra bits, such as powerpack, or whatever to make it a decent pc with power.
So your cheap pc is not so cheap.
But at least they have a good name.
But make sure you get an xp cd with it, in case the thing crashes.

Clearly I have purchased a ticket (without being forced to) to watch a film trhat I wanted. This is done after the film has been made.
But with the BBC the licence is there to pay for the shows to be made, almost like being a shareholder but without the financial benifits.
You can infact invest in films, where if they do well you get some money back plus a few other benafits.
However with the bbc licence, I am paying for shows to be made regardless if I want them to be made or not. I get anoyed that total dimwits are sat presenting shows, and getting paid.
But my point about the bbc selling the dvd's is that I have already paid to have these shows made. Why should I pay again to have them on dvd?

No but what a good idea
you have to pay to watch broadcast tv in the UK?
Yep, it's basically a tax for the box that sits in the corner. We have to pay for the BBC (Britich Broadcasting Corporation) whether we actually watch it or not. Even if you tuned the BBC out from your TV you will still have to pay for it. If you get SKY, which some people pay around £400 per year for and all you ever watch is TV from a satelite, you still haver to pay the license fee.
Another thing, I have a Digital box and just watch all the free stuff, now there is a channel called UK TV Gold, I might be wrong but it's all BBC programmes, and if I want to watch that I have to pay extra, they are all old programmes as well.
So BBC, FUCK OFF! and that's what I tell the TV license people when they come round.
They knocked on my door once and said "do you live here" I asked who was asking and he said he couldn't tell me, so I said "well then I can't tell you if I live here" he asked me again and again I asked who he was. This bit got me, he then said "I can't tell you under the data protection act" so I just said well I can't tell you who lives here so FUCK OFF!" :asshole:

But it is crazy that if your poor, you can become an automatic criminal for not paying for a licence.
Some people do strugle on low income, and tv is not a fancy toy, but a vital bit of comunication which provides people with information. Its the meadia that most information is now given to people. Without a tv you do not have access to information.

BOLLOCKS
TV is not vital communication
information is available on many other free mediums other than TV
OK the internet is not free but the info on it generally is.
and if people are on such a low income then they should use it to feed their children properly instead of sitting on their arses watching shite on TV.
I will say it again the TV licence money is worth it for the BBC website alone
and if you can prove you have no access to BBC channels you dont have to pay a TV licence. as the licence is for the recieving equipment.

I think you are not understanding what the licence fee is for.
The money goes towards new programmes, staffing, technology, local projects to name a few. It's also used to build new stations like Black Radio & The Asian Network - key to us as a country developing.
Its also worth noting that the most profitable channel on Sky is UK Gold, old BBC programmes played with COMMERCIAL breaks...
Let me ask the question this way round dude, would you pay 80 per month for a full sky package if there were no adverts, me yes I would pay 100 per month.
I think the people that dont pay should have their TV's smashed in front of them, we need a state TV channel that is respected through out the world.
Our lass manages the Hull studio, granted they have so twats working there but most of the people have worked with other channels / companies. Most of them want to be with Beep as they are seen as the media group - My opinion on that - well I disagree I think they work em too much and under pay them and are too PC for their own good.
Only poor people and gypo's don;t buy a licence for their TV, give it 5 years we will be buying a PC licence as apposed to a TV licence :)

nah mate not paying your TV licence just shows how little you value the media industry you work in....well done.
Here's some advice I was given in my darkest days,
You don't mess with the council tax or TV licence, why? Cause they are state funded by the people who you share your community with, if you do you are pretty likely to end up in jail.
Geezer, you can be as big and bold on here as you like, by not paying the TV licence, based on the fact you are a UK resident means you think you are above the law.....well done I'm proud of you, you have websites, run a business but can't pay out 11 quid a month.
BTW I never mentioned the poll tax, you going all HF on me?

I don't think I am above the law I just refuse to pay for what I consider an unfair tax. I mentioned the poll tax because that was another tax that the majority of people thought was unfair and refused to pay.
If we all did the same with the TV license I'm sure it would be scrapped.
This is the 21st century, are you telling me the BBC could not come up with a way for us to "Pay as You Go"? of course they could, but their 50 odd billion revenue would probably be halved or maybe they would lose even more than that.

You should listen to James Whale (talk sport) as he doesnot pay it too.
The problem with not paying is that they have such a powerfull 'tv licence police' force that they will get to you.
I think you would have more chance of selling cocain than not having a tv licence.
But the bbc now is under preser to justify themselves.
If you are againsts the tv licence, the best way to get back at the bbc is to create a site so entertaining that no one will want to watch tv, but instead go on your site.
If I was you I would pay it, otherwise you may get a big fine.

James Whale, the big fat bloke that swears somethig is white when its black......wow great role model.
I think DVD what you will find is the licence is changed they have already sugested that people will need a licence per pc per internet connection.
I also think we all need to understannd we get way more then just 2 TV channels. They have numerous projects at local level which is funded by the licence fee and these projects include TVOD, Digital, Internet and also proving open centres to those who can not get online at home.
The BBC in Hull also provides tech training to OAP's showing them how to use digital cameras and dvd players.
Any fool could earn enough to pay their licence fee by posting on netpond 200 times in month, thats how cheap it is :)
James Whale should know better, he works in media and at some point in his carear being paid by the very money he refuses to pay.
Still if james jumped off a cliff maybe his army of non payers would follow

LOL detecter vans. Dude that was a marketing tool. The reason the licence people know you dont have a licence, is because they know every household has a TV, if you havnt got a licence you are probably avoiding paying.
Geezer, telling them to fuck of is OK, but they DO come back with a warrant and a police man and unless you have taken down all your boxes, dishes and arieals and hidden the TV's you will get fined.
Happened to an old next neighbour about 8 years ago.
By the way, I think its great value for money and didnt even have any idea how much it was till this post. We have the best TV in the world bar none and the quality is kept up by other stations having to compete with the quality of the beeb. As well as the beeb itself, the radio, the world service etc etc

They have been back a few times now and the last time they threatened to get a warrant, I said go on then go and get one, I'm still waiting, that was about 8 months ago.
Saying that they will probably be round now with a van load of old bill to nick me.
The thing is though they can't just come round here and nick whoever is in the house at the time. So if I'm in someones house doing a bit of decorating for them and they come with the police, which I very much doubt, they could nick me for having no license in a house I don't live in.
Maybe you think they will check with the Electoral Roll, well I'm not on that, another thing I refuse to do, so now they arrest me and it turns out they have fucked it all up and now I scream wrongful arrest and false imprisonment.
You think it's value for money and you pay, good luck, but I don't think it's value for money so I don't pay.
If I go to a restaurant and I'm not happy with the meal I don't pay or at least I get money off the bill. If at the end of the year I am not happy with what was on the BBC could I ask for my money back, cause I could, and they would tell me what I tell them FUCK OFF!

One of the shops we have is dvd rental and when we first purchased it they where paying the tv licence. But the only set the shop has is a wall mounted flat screen for playing previews. There is no arial into the premises.
After three months of phone calls and a visit from them finally got it in writing that we dont need to pay for a tv licence. Its wasnt the money as it probally cost me more in lost man hours and tele calls than the licence would have. I dont mind paying my tv licence for home but I just begrudged paying it for there.

http://www.tvlicensing.biz/detection/images/tv.gif
The TVLA/BBC/Capita's website [www.tvlicensing.co.uk] states the following on TV detection: "we can detect a TV in use, in any area. That's because every TV contains a component called the 'local oscillator', which emits a signal when the television is switched on. It's this signal that the external aerials on our vans pick up." It also states that hand-held scanner are used to locate television sets in hard to reach places.
... Now, first of all, the actual existence of a fleet of detector vans is a mythology that has been created over half a century by BBC press officers. The vans that drive around are therefore deception vans rather than detector vans. The text below is a recitation of the science involved ...
So what about this 'local oscillator'. What does it do ?
TV's do give off several types of electromagnetic [radio] waves. When switched on, a TV behaves like a low-powered transmitter. Transmitter ? well, yes ... see picture below ...
... Televisions -and radio receivers for that matter- are so called super heterodyne receivers. Incoming high frequency signals [the TV channels] are mixed with the TV's internal oscillator [local oscillator] to produce a lower, fixed-frequency signal [the intermediate frequency of 39.5Mhz] that is used for further processing [audio/video]. Although great care is taken to shield the local oscillator from the mixer, some of this signal leaks back up the aerial/cable. This signal is transmitted for a short distance, but far enough to be picked up by the detector vans.

Why you are licencing you TV set not the fact you watch or cant watch the BBC. Its not really going to break the bank......
The only way not to pay as I understand it is to not have a telly
Why buy a car to put in a garage? Besides if that was the case you would not have to pay road tax.
Buy a licence don't be a pikey its not like its some massive bill. They will get you and they will fuck you over for it.
I know you wouldn't have to, but what if it became law that you had to. Would just accept that and pay because that is the law and would think that would be fair?
A lot of people have cars that they don't use becaue they are restoring them.
One of my friends died about 20 years and his parents have kept his car, they keep it off the road and don't use it, now would it be fair to say they have to pay for tax?
So if I have a TV and never watch the BBC is fair that I have to pay for something I don't use?

Exactly, so we have to pay a tax for that little box that sits in the corner and NOT a subscription to the BBC and thier programmes.

Yes as legally you need a licence to own the hardware. As I said if a car is off the road and parked off the road you dont pay road tax.
You have got a TV set so you need a licence, Geezer they will get you and they will screw you for it, not worht messing with the government over few pounds. Once they get you for one thing they will start looking at all your affairs got sort it out.

Its not a tax, its a fee, like when people have a fishing licence or a used to have a dog licence. I'm sure your accountant saves you more the monthly fee each month.
If people like you paid the licence then maybe it would come down in price, as it stands we have to pay for bits you don't pay :)

OK lets have a hyperthetical situation, maybe you can then answer whether you think it's fair or not.
The law changes and it's now illegal to have a car without road tax, even if you never use the car and it's kept off road.
You have a car in your garage that you are restoring and you never use it on the roads, it's kept in the garage while you work on it and it will take you another 5 years to get it finished.
So now because it's the law you will have to tax that car even though you won't be using it for at least 5 years.
Now do you think that would be fair and would you be happy to pay it?

Just as well really cos your watching the bits I don't

Yes its a well known fact that after not paying your tv licence the government put the full weight of the law investigating all the other things you may or may not be doing. I wouldnt wonder if they dont send a whole fleet of vans, all detecting something or other around.

Well I figure they would not call it road tax, it would be car tax, and would I pay it yes, would I think it was fair, yes as I would know about the tax before I bought the car.
You have a TV, you need to buy a licence, its not a question of fair or unfair - its the law.
Its not fair that some one can have a baby then give up work and go onto the benefit to bring up that child and then stand there have the bloody cheek to say 'I bring my kid up alone with no help, I buy all the food and clothing' - these are things I see as not fair Geezer.
I think its unfair that old people are subjected to the youth of today, I think its unfair that you dont pay your TV licence and the rest of us do. I think its unfair a bank will not process for porn but will take on a gaming site or wine club.
I'm shocked that as a working person you choose not to pay the smallest bill any household in the UK has. 'Penny wise pound stupid'

Dude, if you fuck with goverment departments they will come together and nail you for all your mr meaners. Its not like pissing off the gas board or orange. I know all this because its happened to me, I thought I could get away with it then one day there they were on my doorstep.
At the time the reason I was not paying was that I had paid for 12 month licence though moved, they way they saw it my licence was being used at the other house.
You can be as fluffy as you like about it, truth is you prob pay your bills so have not experienced the other side. I have JT I have the cunts turn up at my door on a Saturday morning, basically tell me that by 3pm on the Monday Im to have a licence or I shall be fined 2K.

What other government departments investigated you, when you didnt pay yours?
Is this mass investigation over a £130 licence happen to all the millions of people that dont pay various tax's or is it only for the TV licence?
What exactly is the department called that co-ordinates all these seperate government bodies and massive buerocracies, into a single investigation called? :smoke:

The TV Licence office were linked in with the council tax office - I alway have paid my council tax, fallen behind but always paid it.
The reason the TV licence people turned up on my door step was due to me paying council tax on the address, and rightly so.
I can't give you a department name or team - I can only give you info based on my personal experience and the experience of others around me.
I can't give you a department name or team - I can only give you info based on my personal experience and the experience of others around me.
Because there isnt one as everyone knows.
What a load of crap. As if the goverment waists billions of man hours and zillions of pounds on mass investigations on anything anyone has ever done because they didnt pay a fine.
Especially when this mass investigation force that must be investigating every single person whos ever paid a fine. And its investigating "anything" they "may" or "may not" have done over the past "however" many years, over all the different govermental bodies.
We both know they dont. But if you want to keep saying there is this huge agency that employes I guess millions of people to co ordinate mass investigations on millions of people who daily dont pay fines then :smoke:

you can't be confused, you don't think its fair so don't buy one.....pretty clear cut, you should have a TV licence though you choose instead to break the law because you don't think its fair.
affraid to tell you mate it did happen and still happens.....
OK so what investigation happened to YOU after you got caught not paying your TV licence as you said it would to geezer and WHO did this inter govermental investigation?
As I said above the reason the TV licence people know you havnt got a licence is because they know everyone has a TV, no men in black, no vans. The go by who lives where. So there is no reason to think you would be found any other way. As there is no other way of finding out who hasnt got a licence. I clearly pointed that out
So as I pointed that out already we dont need to go over that again. What we now need to go over is you clearly stated, that if Geezer didnt pay his licence all the goverment bodies all club together and investigate anything he may or may not have done.
OK, so we will leave it that this mass investigation unit who is co ordinating this between hundreds of government departments has no name and no one has ever heard off (including you) allthough it must have a million people working on billions of cases. Lets go straight to your own experiances. AFTER you got caught not paying your licence what investigation happened to YOU? and by WHO?

Yes if you read why I thought I was ok NOT to have one you will understand my cock up - look Geezer I just think its mad not to few pennies a day it costs.
As I said I got the hassle from these people and it was not nice, I seen it happen to others too, for the sake of a £14 DD its a lot grief that can be avioded,

It's absurd to have to pay to watch advertiser-funded broadcast tv...we don't have to do that here, but everyone has cable anyway. The UK should just collect a little extra sales tax on the sale of the unit in the first place, and then require networks to give them a few public service ads.

Its not avdertiser funded. Its advert free. Besides you cant compare the quality of US TV to UK TV its not the same thing at all. The quality of UK TV is so much better its untrue. One of the reasons is that the chanels with adverts have to compete with chanels without. That way an average show gets one advert break at most. In the states its not possible to watch a show without break after break after break. To most UK people US TV is unwatchable. Plus it funds some of the greatest shows ever made, all free and all advert free. Shows like the office. Plus Radio many top quality radio shows, all advert free and top news stations, all advert free and top quality

theres is one thing I have not said -
UK Gold makes the most profit - well it did when I was with CWC the reason - it was all old BBC programmes that have advertising in between them, as the programmes are all pre made they basically line up whats going out and let it get on with it.
I want to watch the super bowl this year though will Sky+ it so I dont have to watch a break after every play :)
