View Full Version : Sky TV - Double Standards?

well what can one say but is there s double standard within the media industry over how we protect our children from gaining access to explicit material.
Yesterday we booted up our Sky+ box to now see that Adult has been given its own menu on the main page. Give the fact that this is on my TV menu and we do not have the option to not list these channels I think its a bloody disgrace.
It's bad enough they have tits and ass on display each evening on the stupid sex text channels, now Playboy have a home shopping channel with the play girls presenting!!!!
We as webmasters are asked to prevent children from gaing entry to our sites, we are asked to use warning pages and ICRA tabs to help reduce the chances of kids looking at porn.
Sky is installed in around 4 - 6 million homes in the UK, kids will use the system and prob have a better grasp on it then their parents yet they pull a stunt like this.
It really concerns me greatly that publications like the Sport can spread their filth on the bottom shelf, Sky TV can pump porn into our living room yet we face massive restrictions on how we work and rightly so.
Its just a thought by surely Sky should block ALL adult channels unless their subscriber calls in and requests they be unblocked.
I know we can go through channels and block them though with around 20 - 30 stations listed as adult, + however many that change at 9pm to sex text / phone sex channels I feel Sky have a responsibility to block this content.
Damian, you are with Playboy what do your guys think to this latest 'home page' change Sky have made, surely Playboy rolling out semi nude women to sell worse products then QVC is a negative for the companies branding?
Do you also know if Playboy & Sky discuss the menu changes, it's a sad day for TV in the UK and if this is the future then I want the past back.

I also hit '0' yesterday for our sky+ personal planner to watch some recorded stuff and noticed it had changed.
I even said to my missus that getting to a menu called 'ADULT' was a little to easy.
To be honest, i hate Sky and keep wondering why i pay £50 a month for it.

I am confused?
Sky digital changed the application on the box yesterday. Part of the change now means 'Adult' is featured on the home pagfe of the TV guide in section 2.
Basically they have made it easy to find the explicit channels. Option 7 on the key pad takes you directly to all the sex channels.
We were not told of the change before hand nor were we given details onhow to block or remove this option. In stead we come home and see it on our telly.
If you have Sky+ have a look at your new menu and see for your self, no net nanny, no ICRA - 2 clicks and you are in filth heaven.

Just spoke to them Matt, they don't feel 'Adult' is porn...... OK so they have Playboy TV, The Adult Channel etc what do they think these people pump out over their network?
BTW I stand corrected they have 8 million users, this change only effected the digital viewers.

Its certainly not non explicit though and is certainly not family viewing. Some the the text / chat channels are pretty graphic. These guys deliver a lot of content into a lot of homes mate, its the fact they made a change which made - to quote their own words - 'make it easier to find what you want'.
Pre update is was not easy to get to the sex related channels now its there bold as brass in the middle of the screen, if it was text link on a web page it would be a 'prime location'.

You make a fair point but after spending time travelling all around Europe and living in Spain for a while I personally think that they have a more healthy attitude towards sex. I wouldn’t want to put hardcore pornography in front of kids of course but the “sex is dirty” attitude is something I have never really understood.

Never underestimate just how many sad and lonely people there are out there. :)
As someone who has to watch a few of the adult channels for biz reasons... Check out Bravo... They show old Playboy tv UK and US programmes open on air. These are no different to what consumers pay for as an encrypted channel.

The way these channels are presented is not plesent, they show sex in bad light and are basically really sleazy. Theres nothing educational about a lass half naked being very sugestive trying to get guys to text in.
The free views start as early as 7pm, they advertise - 'if you want hard filthy British Sex' thats not good for mainstream telly no matter what country you are in.
I'm with you on the 'sex is dirty' attitude is not good however the content being broadcast on Sky's adult section esp the unscrambled channels makes sex look dirty.
My issue with what sky have done is a simple one, they have made it easy to find the content and done so without warning their subscribers so they could take the required actions to stop it.
Banks in the UK wont give adult sites Merchant accounts, Sites like Nochex & PayPal remove their service from the adult industry yet Sky update their system making adult more visable to basically drive more traffic through to the people who put content out on their network.
Of all the above services Sky are the biggest brand kids will know as users/viewers yet they have given Adult their own prime sub heading on the home page.
Any how hopefully its all blocked now our lass has been doing what was susgested by danbrusca.

:agree:
It also never ceases to amaze me how British society in general seems to think that seeing a naked person will irreparably damage a child.

well what can one say but is there s double standard within the media industry over how we protect our children from gaining access to explicit material.
There are enough places in the mainstream media moaning about the "easy" availability of porn - I don't expect to see such things on B&B!
Seeing nudity doesn't hurt children. More likely trying to hide it all away will ensure they have hangups in later life. In Amsterdam, you can see kids walking home from school through the red light district, without getting mentally scarred. In Germany, you'll see naked kids and adults mixing in public saunas. The British attitude to nudity and sex is fucked up - surely we in this industry are supposed to be the enlightened ones?

Naked people and porn/sexually explicit material are two different things.
I dont think seeing a nude person will damage anyone, I do however think that kids seeing explicit material all over unscrambled telly kind of suggests its socially aceptable.

As I said Nudity and Sexually explicit are two different things. In Amsterdam you see kids in the RDL, really? I have been to Amsterdam many many times and only ever seen tourists, with their kids and guys looking for a shag.
The RDL is just that a red light district I don't recall any schools being located near or in the centre of it.
Enlightened ones...no I think we are the ones who do things the right way by warning visitors and labeling sites, hence the 'double standards'. Sky have not been responsible, they have grouped and listed the 'Adult' channels on the home page/start menu.
Naked people is one thing explicit sexual content is another, the channels grouped in 'Adult' pump out explicit content.

I have to agree on all ponts but in different parts.
We, the UK, have a terrible prudeness about us. If some star, bb contestant or anyone else for that matter shows some tit, ass, or sex it is plastered all over the newspaper like it is such a big deal.
Yuong boys arent allowed to look at naked manequins! NAKED fucking maneuins how sad are we. By telling kids that sx is dirty,. wrong an they shouldnt do it is making them want it more. I know I was one of them!
But sky adult offering these channles in open view is somewhat ridiculous. When you think of it this way the kids that are able to work the remote controls ar in the 10-12 ages and they are curious about everything so if they see something that says" adult" they think yes mummy cant watch me watching this cos she isnt here I will just put it on.
Both agreements are correct but the simple face is we cant change any of it...

I really don't see it as Sky's fault any more than it's my fault if they see any of my sites. It's about time parents started taking responsibility for the actions of their kids rather than everyone else have to do it for them.

Yes it is, THEY decided to pull forward and present the 'Adult Section' on their main menu.
Whos fault is that mine? We didn't call sky up and say hi could you add a shortcut to your porn channels on the home page.
Some one in the marketing team thought this was a good idea and would boost sales making finding content easier whatever. BUT if they make changes to the application we use to access their content they have an obligation to ensure its family friendly.

Ok so its OK for sky to sell us a family pack then change their application and add 'Adult' on the home page without prior warning and pump unscrabbled explicit content into our homes?
I agree that the ultimate responsibility lays with us as to what can be viewed and what can't be viewed. But for us to take that control we need to know that service provider is about to change application.

SGS has a good point there....
If we didnt rely on tv to watch our kids for us thenmaybe things wouldnt seem so bad but todays culture shows that more kids sit in front of the box rather than go outside in play..Not that I mind its almost far too dangerous to let kids out and play just now with blair letting all the pedos get away with...well.. pedo'ing..
But in saying that sky should have let us know there was gonig to be an adult section there..I for one DONT use the menu page but what if my kid did?

I don't think they give hoot, sad really - but looks to me like they just want to send more viewers to those channels.
My missus whos a TM for the BBC hit the nail on the head.
She said - its not just the fact they have added the 'Adult' shortcut but they have put in the middle of the screen so you can not help but notice it.

Take Blair for instance. You have people praising him to the high heavens even though he is killing people that need not to be killed (our soldiers who dont need to be over there)...
He has homeless people walking streets while offering money to refugees to leave the country which will only entice more to come over so they can get paid to leave.
He offers cushty jobs and houses to those who come over from different countres while people over here are still struggling to make ends meet, who are homeless and cant even afford a cheeseburger from mcdonalds.!
He lets pedophiles work in schools and allows burglars the option to sue the person that they are burgling...
We "get" to watch him on TV spruting a lot of bullshit that is probably going to cause more irreparable damage than constenting adults and sex...
Now I see THAT worse than watching two people having sex.

Sorry, only just saw this.
Playboy One, the free to air channel, is far from pornography! Playboy TV , The Adult Channel, Spice and Climax 1,2 and 3 are as pornographic as OFCOM allow and are all encrypted.
We strictly operate within the law.
Before the change in the EPG, Playboy One (along with Babecast and all that) were randomly dotted about. We were next to E4+1. In order to make it easier for parents to limit access to this adult area, they put them all together. This way, parental control is a cinch.
Possibly you are right that there should have been communication to customers about this change. We have known about it for few weeks.
However, there is nothing at all that would concern me about my kid seeing the content broadcast on Playboy One. Some of the texting channels are a bit different. And certainly have much lower production values.
Playboy One was an experiment to see if it would drive subscriptions to the pay-for stations - and it seems to be working.
Sorry if a clothed girl selling iPods got you so annoyed mate. But now you know how easy it is to block them, and hopefully now you will understand that banking these channels together actually makes it easier for you to edit the access you give your kids.

Hi Damian,
The sub menu has put them together in a list though they are still scattered across various channels Babe Station XXX is the worst offender with 4 channels of nothing but filthy talk. They are situated between regular channels.
If you go and use the menu and were a Sky+ owner the habbit was TV Guide, Push Up and bingo you are on the Sky+ planer, the same actions now take you to the Adult content, thats the concern.
What we within the adult business see as porn / explicit is very different to what my gran for example with view as explicit, to me Sky should have thought long and hard about how they did this, warned people so they could do what was needed.
I know what the content is on PBTV / Adult Channel & TVX as I used to sell the 'Adult Package' while working for CWC back in the 90's. I also know how many people called up about the free views after they caught lovers, kids watching them.
In my view it should not be on any box as standard, if people want to view explicit content they should have to call up and perform and AVS check or password set up to even get the previews.
I bet as a result of this change your traffic and the text channels traffic has increased as prior to the change it was not easy finding the adult content.
It's just bad planing on Sky's behalf, they sell us a family pack then shove adult on the menu - comman sense says the two don't go together. :)

I am with Damian on this one.( I have to be as we have filmed for them LOL) Yes, SKY have now put all adult channels behind an clearly marked "Adult" button
Playboy one is a fantastic idea.. I say that because we had the idea 3 years ago and wrote it into a 5 year business plan for adult tv channel..
(a lot of these ideas Playboy and others are starting now BTW) I do agree however that most of the stuff on Adult SKy is crap
Its not PB's job to stop the channel getting to people, quite the opposite..
Its really up to lazy parents who let their kids get free access to TV. As i said TV is a cheap babysitter for the masses.
Look after your kids properly and they would never get near the TV alone and at that time of night
We uphold all age restrictions in our house whether its games, DVD's or whatever. and we never allow them free acces to TV and more important than all that
They are NEVER in the house alone
Well, as I said, I don't view clothed girls selling iPods as porn. I doubt your gran does either. And after she's gone to bed, all you will see is legal pre-TX stuff. Maybe a boob or two. Nothing more. Nothing not on Channel 4 after 9pm.
As for cellcast stuff, I agree, it's quite grotty, but I don't really have anything to do with it.
Maybe take it up with Sky direct?
Be interested in hearing their response.
Censorship is something I am very against though.
However, control is something I am very in favour of. And now you have the control to block all the adult channels.
I've just looked at the Sky sent me and all I can see is all the adult channels now together. but maybe I'm missing it, as I'm knackered and it's the end of the week!

Our one is reading now! I took the book off her and gave her the sky+ remote :lmao2:
No seriously, I just think sky could have rolled this out a bit better it can't be large % of their clients that use the adult services.
I can't do without sky as they have all the sporting events I enjoy to watch, Sky+ as a device is the best thing thats happened in TV. The amount of telly we watch as a household has gone down, down a lot.
We record basically anything we want to see and then watch maybe two things a night. In the past I would channel hop all night long just to find something worth watching.
By the time you remove the commercials and in the case of BB the 'ring now for...' bits you can watch a live hour in 40 mins or less. In stead of rushing about to see things, now I can watch something while I have screen break or grab a beer.
VCR could never do this.

One other thing i have noticed in the new SKY menu is an "International" button
does this give you news or programmes from around the world..?
News from Italy, france, Germany. ????
interesting programming about Canada, Japan ????
NO its all Asian.....
Come on SKY this is europe we are in Yes we have a large Asian community and i have no problem with that and actually embrace it but If your going to call a section of your programming International then give us International
Why not call it "Ethnic" is that a problem???
I don't bother with Sky + but I saw an ad last night that they're updated the whole listings programme even for the regular subscribers.
Having Adult as a separate choice is a good idea.. And as for the soft channels like Babe Station.. I've been moaning about that since a relative of Sahara saw her on that last year. It's on 172 which is also the games channel, so any kid can see it if they're up late !!! In fact a few of the girls have told me that they had calls from kids when working on there, which must be due to this...
As far as I'm concerned all the semi or full on adult channels should be in the one "900" band :)

Yeah there have been ads on the channels letting people know that they are goign to be changing their menu's list. I think the frog or duck and dog is telling us, cant be sure...but it says these changes will be happening spontaneously through jan and feb but it is to let you know now there will be a differnt menu soon. I think they get too many complints the other day and had to take it offline and warn everyone first.

Ethnic no more describes asian than international does. Ethnic != asian.

As far as I know. I am not totally sure how much of this is public information so probably shouldn't go into any more detail for now.
And yes, Jeremy is MD of Playboy UK now.
Damian..
That's great about Jeremy...
I met him in 2002 when he came to meet another Indian model who I was working with pre Sahara Knite at my place. We were talking about building a tv series around her. He was a good guy, but unfortunately the model was date raped on NYE 2002 and gave up the biz, so nothing happened :(
The model kept Jeremy waiting as she was using the jacuzzi in my bath. I told her that the centre jets were better than any vibrator on her clit, and she spent 20 mins making sure I was right... LOL. The best model I've ever shot. She wouldn't stop till she had a least one real orgasm in every scene :)
And you have a real star in Lolly Badcock doing your trailers.....

LOL! I will have to mention that to Jeremy!
And yes, Lolly is amazing. Such a nice girl off camera and such a brilliant one when she's 'on'...
Damian
To remind Jeremy.. The meeting was at my unfinished loft style flat near Wandsworth Bridge... And it's still not finished :)

Do you think his wife and newly born child may finish it?
;)

Wish him all the best from me.. If he remembers who I am, as it was some time ago.
If his wife and baby can use a paintbrush... They're welcome :)
Sorry guys.... We've hijacked the thread...
