Video conversion question for iMovie

One for any mac people out there (Damian?) I have quite a few videos in various formats (mpg and wmv mainly) that I want to use to put together a movie using iMovie (its family stuff not porn!) but iMovie will only import certain formats, so what format will it work with, and whats the best software (for mac preferably) I can use to convert the source videos to a iMovie compatible format?
