Friday 13th Kills my laptop

Fuck Fuck Fuck .... been building 2 new sites all week on my laptop and about 11.30pm last night ... my laptop just dies on me !!!

Mouse freezes and then the screen just goes blank. I switched it off and left it for about 30 mins ... switch it back on, bios loads but just goes to a blank screen .... no activity from the hard disk led.

Left it overnight, and this morning it boots up as normal, xp loads ok ... after about 5 mins, mouse freezes again and screen then goes blank.

Any thoughts on what the prob is?

To be honest, I am finding the last few weeks that my pc freezes on first boot up, but then works fine.

I am not sure if this is a sign that its the pc coming to an end, but I think it will be time soon for a new pc.

I'd suspect the hard drive ..sorry to be the bearer of shitty news

Sounds like the HD. Was the laptop running hot? You may be able to get the data off ok if you have a friendly laptop specialist place there?

That's what I initially thought ... however after a bit (well a lot actually) of trial and error it eventually turned out to be a dodgy 512mb memory chip.

It seems to be working fairly well now !!

If so ( Yes I know it sounds daft, but apparently it works) seal it in a food bag, put it in the freezer overnight, following day, you should have a slightly longer time to empty the drive to a good one.

They are removable ok but it would be easier to put the whole laptop in the freezer.

Just get it looked at, replaced and rescued though as its usually not a problem.

It was running very hot, but after letting it cool down overnight it would let me boot into safe mode, which let me get all my data backed up to DVD.

I'm just going to re-format now and it will be on ebay by the end of the week :)

I would say its overheating my old sony z600-TEK noteback used to overheat I think evenutally overheating fucked the CPU or motherboard because it became unusable

What model is it ?

Are you using it on a flat hard surface so the air intake bit can breathe ?

Maybe open it up and check the fan is working / isn't clogged

It's an Acer TravelMate just over a year old.

It was sitting on my lap, more I think about it now it probably was overheating ... the fan seems to working OK though.
