We use Sony HDR-Z1's (same camera really just more pro funtionality) there is little better for the money and the biggest leap forward in quality since digital

Just took the plunge the other day and ordered a Sony HDR-FX1 because movie content is where my site is lacking. Kinda in shock for ordering it lol but its not been despatched yet. Amazons price just went up over £150 though. There was no way I was ordering something that expensive from some unknown.

if anybody is looking for one of these try HERE !! (http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/home/)

When i buy stuff they are usually the best price and certainly the best service and backup. Even offering to send an immediate replacement from stock when an item i bought failed

hope you dont see the new Sony HVR-A1E and wish you had gone for that as i just have what a camera for the money !!!

Nah i'm happy with what we've bought. But i didn't mind paying extra to order from somewhere like amazon. I just didn't wanna take the risk.

I cant see how ordering from Amazon is riskier than an authorised Sony dealer as Amazon use third parties and sometimes you dont know where an item comes from

Does the item you bought have an E at the end of its name?

great Camera though and good luck

Elisha Jade
01-13-06, 10:42 AM
no E :)

xcite-tv

no E :)

Then whats the suffix letter ?

and if its not an "E" (for the European market) then you have bought an import

Elisha Jade
01-13-06, 11:05 AM
does that matter? :(

xcite-tv
01-13-06, 11:19 AM
does that matter? :(

hopefully not, The instructions may be in another language but you can download them

the big problem is it won't come with Sonys Silver Service package where if it goes wrong they will send an immediate replacement

Not 100% sure on warranty stuff but as long as you know where it came from you can send it back its just down time as it can take weeks

Try and find out who the supplier is as its NOT amazon

My advice is back out if you can....before it arrives

but good luck anyway you should be ok as Sony is generally ok

Elisha Jade
01-13-06, 11:22 AM
Amazon deal with the returns though don't they?

I was a bit worried after you mentioned the E about adapters and connectors etc, but it says it comes with all of the adapters needed. Guess I didn't notice that lol.

I'll see what the bf thinks when he gets back, he's the photog/videog so I guess I should ask him what he wants to do.

xcite-tv
01-13-06, 11:38 AM
The leads should be ok

But not sure of Amazons returns policy as they in many cases are not the actual supplier and you don't find out who until you find your goods coming from Canada or somewhere as happened to me once...

dont mean to be too alarmist as i dont know what the policy of goods like this is

hope its all ok and didn't mean to dampen enthusiasm on your new purchase and i sure it will be ok

Elisha Jade

If you do get one, get a new computer to edit on ;)

I have dual 2.4ghz processors in my machine and it's a *lot* slower editing HD than it is DV.

The quality is awesome though - you will not believe the screen grabs came off a video camera, and you will need your models to take extra care with their makeup cos HD shows up every imperfection!

Dont worry just shoot everything in high def and edit in dv until your familiar with the way it works
once you are you can redo it in HD anytime
more work yes, but if you go head first into HD you will end up with problems

what do you edit on ?

But finding it slow as you have to convert HD to edit and reconvert back

Some nice transitions and effects and for sound is actually better than most pro stuff

Loving the image quality u got there man. Did you export at the wrong pixel size though? It's meant to be 1:333 I think - might sort out that stretched look you've got there...

My first shoot with the Sony HDR-FX1E. Still messing with the settings, and lighting could have been better. Bear in mind this is less than a quarter of the raw resolution!

Not if you're only outputting for the web. Just capture, edit, and output using the NTSC settings in your software. If you wanted to make DVD content for Europe you might want to convert from NTSC to PAL, but you should be able to do that in the software.

OK first attempt at using it, bit shaky, blury lol but we'll get there through practice. My pc can't cope with rendering it though and was overheating and beeping. Which is kinda annoying as I do have 4 case fans lol.

Anyways its nothing special, but its huge res yaay :)

Heh, nice to see u got it all working. I was a bit shocked at how much it taxes the processors on my PC while editing / rendering. Now we need to get a couple of dedicated video editing machines as well lol.

Any idea what final output resolution you're gonna use? The settings u have there will work out about 40mb per minute. The settings I've kinda settled on for now is about 10mb / min.

Elisha Jade
01-16-06, 04:52 PM
Nah not quite yet but probably not that high. I'm gonna provide lower normal res options as well because a few of the people i've showed it to it jumps on their machines.

Dedicated video editing machines sound like the way to go. My pc has only got a athlon 3200 with 1 gig of ram and 370gig hard drive space but a lot of that is full. Plus it would mean I could use my pc whilst videos are encoding. We've got a long way to go with the different settings / colour etc and of course my nerves lol.

Sounds like a plan. I have a dual processor Athlon with 2 2.4ghz processors in it and 740gb of space, and it flies with regular DV editing / rendering. The HD stuff really drags tho. Time to go shopping again!

I'm gonna start a thread about editing machines....

there is not a PC with fast enough processors yet that can edit HD raw

Yes that's the one. Most amazing little program ever. Downloaded the trial on a dedicated video editing PC, didn’t use it as the version with Premier Pro was better then when the 15, 30 or whatever days were up it completely shut every program (Premier Pro, Premier 6, Cleaner XL, etc) down to the point of the PC needing to be rebooted several times. Had to reboot in safe mode and then uninstall which took an age and it also managed to wreck about 24 hours of work that Cleaner XL had just processed.
