I have been having problems all day. I don't think it is my end, least I hope not. I see one of BT's routers is down so I am hoping that is the problem.

Have you rebooted your modem? What modem are you using?

I haven't actually. I am using a Linksys WAG54G router.
I did a traceroute this morning and it stopped about 3 hops out so I looked at InternetTrafficReport (http://www.internettrafficreport.com/europe.htm) and spotted the BT router down so assumed from there.
I'll give that a try, can't hurt.

Well, the reboot seems to have worked. I wish I had tried that before.
I don't get it though. I was able to get to some sites but not others!!!
Thanks for the help and suggestion btw.

It’s just one of those weird static things and whenever you get a connection problem it’s a good place to start. :)

Well all is not fixed it would seem. I appear to have a different batch of sites I can't get to now. I have tried another 'general reset' but still the same.
I will let the internet take a rest and see what it is like i the morning :)
The first thing I do if I get any connection problems is unplug my router (and then plug it back in again :D ) seems to cure 90% of problems. Also get the latest drivers or whatever they are called for routers.

My d-link often gets hot, so I unplug it for 30 mins to cool down.

We have 5 of the BT 2Wire modem/routers working 24/7 now and had zero problems with any of them. Great modems, they run 4 PCs each, network cable (no USB crap) and wireless enabled too.

try using a proxy, see if you can reach the sites then. possibly the DNS records of your ISP are fucked and cannot find the servers. if so, it should resolve when they update the records next time.

Thanks. I gave that a try and the sites were accessible. I'll leave it until the morning and see what it is like then.
No real troubles here today either

Well things appear to have sorted themselves out this morning. Touch wood. Thanks for the input.
