View Full Version : Hard disks...

Need a little advice from you guys/girls...
I need a good *big* storage solution - ideally at least 1000GB going through a network. (HF, i seem to remember you saying something about a network drive?). Needs to be ready to go and no fitting hard disks into cases.
Any ideas rather than buying several external drives which i have already?
we got that one, idiot proof setup. just open front panel, shove in drive, plug the connectors to it, close, connect to LAN, install driver, presto. took me about 15 minutes alltogether. http://www.netgear.co.uk/digital_home_sc101.php
with the new 500 GB drives you'd have your desired TB, plus, you can network several devices to get more storage. i like the option to mirror whole drives or just folders, which is an advantage to an ordinary RAID setup. it also lets you use 2 drives like it was only one big drive.
also, if access to the drives is an issue (in our case kids using the LAN to connect to the web every other week) it's easily solved, cos only those PCs with the driver installed see the drive to begin with.

Thanks for the info but i really want something "ready to go". Yout thoughts on this (http://www.buffalotech.com/products/product-detail.php?productid=97&categoryid=19)?
*edit*
I could also plug my other external drives into this unit.
i keep reading good things about it, funnily i know noone who uses them though. might be a price issue, Buffalo seems to ask for more just cos it's Buffalo, and how many actually need network storage to begin with.
one reason why i went for the SC101 is it's handy size, it sits on top of my tower case under the desk and the fact i can swap drives as i please, should the size be not enough at some point or one drive go bust.
i was looking at regular external HDDs with LAN support before, but the prices are ridiculous comapred to getting a case and internal drives to stick into.
(a quick check makes it seem 2 x SC101 + 4 x 250GB HDDs are about 35% less than the Buffalo unit, while the Buffalo can be used with OS' other tha nWin 2k/XP as well)

Got it from Dabs and arrived next day over the Xmas period.
Set up as one big drive as theres only temp stuff on it. Acts as a print server as well and the other drives all plug into buffalo - making my life a lot easier and clearing some desk space.
Lacies above get a little hot though, so had to spread them out.

Bit of a risk all as one big drive though?

Yeah but nothing stays on there long.
A load of raw AVI files only which are gone after a few days. If it dies, i got footage on DV still ;)

You can buy an external usb case for around £10.
Then all you do is drop in any hardrive you want.

By the way, exteral drives may not be as fast as an internal one.
For vid editing you want the drive to work as fast as you can.

One like the Buffalo or the Lacie T1 are for video editing. Anything else would be too slow for real time.

Just ordered two myself so fingers crossed they will be here before the weekend. :)

Enjoy :)
Note of caution: If you plug any other drives into it, you need to format them first using terastation software before being able to write to them.

Thanks :)
Will use them as stand-alone back-ups for our Lady-Sonia.com site to replace the Lacies we currently use.
Buffalo's arrived 1st thing this morning. :)
