SKY HD arrives on Friday :)

Mate your world is about to change, for the better. BBCHD i think is repeating the latest attenborough stuff, and it is just gorgeous.

I think HD is one of those things you don't appreciate it till you have it.

Like when DVD's first came out, then you went back and watched a VHS and were amazed that you survived before!

Anyways enjoy! though I do have size envy (only 42"):(

You can get SKY HD in Amsterdam if you want, no need for the jealousy!

Enjoy enjoy!

To be fair, Sky HD isn't even close to a real blu-ray disk in terms of true HD. (decent bit rate, 1080P etc). I am really enjoying the Planet Earth blurays. I use lovefilm and they seem to have everything in bluray now.

Oh, and please tell me you do have a decent home cinema audio rig to compliment the lovely screen you just bought?

Kinda... Im gonna pick up a home cinema sound system, when I go and grab the smaller screen for the bedroom...

I would have ordered it online, but it was one of those 'weird' things, where if I ordered the TV and stand I got a reduced price... But if I ordered 'More'... It kinda all 'went up in price'...

If you know what I mean...
But yeah... Will be grabbing a Sony audio rig '4 Shore' :)

Good, cos having HD without a decent sound system is almost like watching in black and white. It really adds so much. Especially with Dolby Digital or DTS.

I wouldn't recommend Sony for the audio though. Depending on budget, I would look at Denon or Yamaha for the amp. B&W, Kef or Celestion for the speakers.

AV Forums is a good place to go and ask audio/home cinema experts questions and get useful answers back. And they don't mind noobs.

Oh I know. When I worked in mainstream, I launched T3 magazine, so was lucky enough to actually visit every British audio company. You should hear the listening rooms at some of them. Oh man, oh man!

I recently bought an HD projector, 100 odd inch screen, Onkyo amp (true HD audio over HDMI rocks) and some speakers - the difference between that and my HD plasma with surround sound system is just amazing.

You can spend crazy money on these things and go for things like a 1080p projector and then spend thousands on just the speakers alone but my whole rig only cost me about £1,200 (which is less than half what I paid for my telly alone about 3 years ago). Its the way to go for anyone who has the space and who loves movies. sound and technology in general - its almost like being in the cinema! It truly is awesome!

From what I can gather HD just means everything is in super slow motion

Just bought a Samsung 40 inch for the kitchen and the sound from the telly is horrible to the point that it's useless without aftermarket speakers. The speakers built into televisions have never been great but these were so bad the telly was almost useless without the Yamaha speakers that used to be used with the old Panasonic.

Before you buy any audio gear, get a proper demo. Book yourself in at your local Richer Sounds, tell them what gear you're interested in or what budget and get them to set it up for you. Take a couple of your favourite Films and CDs with you and try it... Buy the one you like best... Magazine/Web reviews are good as a starting point but Your eyes know what's best for you.

if its a Thomson box throw it out of the window & buy a Pace one - You can buy them for about £250 and its money well spent as the Thomson boxes are crap and either lock up or freeze - trust me it will drive you crazy :catfight:

result - you'll find yourself checking the hd channels for something to watch as normal tv looks crap - just make sure to readjust your volume as the output is higher, which is a little annoying

You can watch 4:3 TV on a Widescreen, you know. You just have to find the "don't stretch" button on the remote control :-)

and aspect ratio has what relationship to HD exactly?
