2006: death of TV

OK, TV will not end, but I believe that in 2006 we will see a surge in online TV shows.

As TV itself puts out junk, and now gets less viewers, the internet will start creating great shows.

I think of it as a sort of punk for TV. In the 70's punk changed music and art. Basically punk meant anybody could form a group. The net now means anyone an produce TV or radio, with no rules.

Ricky Gervais is now making a podcast. His rules. This could be where many 'stars' to make there own shows, and by pass TV or radio executives.

I am sure that some big firms will consider setting up sites with full TV shows. This could wework out cheaper than advertisements. Such as Movies.com has some very entertaining shows on it.

This is going to be a great shock to TV companies where they will loose there grip, to small firms.

In fact will new mobile phones, pda's and new ipods, people will be taking there shows with them.

Interestingly angry Kid, is huge on the net.

Of which 99% will be shit and the remaining 1% will be watched by about by 150 people tops.

Computers are an inherently shitty medium for watching television. Mobile phones, PDAs and ipods are worse.

I don't know if you guys have this in the UK, but here in the states we have a feature called "On Demand." Basically, if you subscribe to a certain cable company, you get a bunch of shows on file that you can watch whenever you want. This On Demand program is going to expand to pay per view and subscription based TV shows (instead of entire network stations) in the very near future. I'm sure this will lead to a lot of independent parties producing their own shows, since they won't have to rely on a network to get picked up.

I think we'll see a few online shows, but not on like a huge level. Everyone would need to have fairly good broadband for that to *really* take off on a level big enough to attract any real corporate interest.

Also, it would need to have an advantage for advertisers that TV doesn't have, and that's not here yet. For consumers to want to watch it, the shows would have to be *that* much better on the internet and computers would have to be more integrated into a typical home.

Hard to sit back on the couch and watch an online show for the majority of people right now.

the big mistake usually made (like in this thread) is to assume that online/web and TV will keep on going seperate ways. wrong.

once feedback channels are widely available (tests using digital cable networks are run all over Europe for example), interactive TV will become standard, thus dragging people 'online' who'd never even have considered using the internet. the net scares them, a TV that lets them interact is still a TV, but with a new option.

when cars were a new thing, everyone owning a car would have a good idea how it works. how many can say so nowadays? a car is a tool like a drill, you use it, when it breaks you have it repaired.

the same will count for the net in 15 years. basically everyone in the civilized world will be using services through it, most won't even realise it.

I guess you are a little bit to enthusiastic. Do not forget you have one or more tV's in more than 90% of all the households, but you have Internet access only in 30% to 65% within the West World. And, do not forget how many people have a TV within there Living Room, but no PC! What do you think, will come more and more when the TV equipment and the PC will be made out of the same box, but this will take another 3 to 8 Years before it will happen and all the old TV's are getting replaced with the new stuff

EDITED: And now I have read your comment again and recognized I have read "OK, TV will end," and not "OK, TV will not end," :D ups

When you can now buy media centres which are dvd/vidoe sized boxes which are pc's designed to be placed under TV's with huge hard drives something will happen with downloadable TV as for real time streaming of tv Telewest are going to be offering a 100MB broadband service in London in 2006 So things will change. The key word is "Multimedia" there will be no single options for IPTV but lots of systems where traditional broadcasting will be a thing of the past and we all become "Broadcasters"

Here in the UK we have had the BBC for too long and are stuck with that mentality
