I bought an xmas present in Dixons today & while I was in there I made the mistake of asking a hapless assistant if they had an dual layer writable DVDs. He didnt have a clue obviously but took me over to the blank media section, and then proceeded to ask *my* advice on the right CDRs to get for his in-car CD/MP3 player. He was under the impression that he needed thicker discs so they wouldn't skip when he drove over a bump.

I was gonna tell him that because MP3s are way smaller than regular CD audio files the player, being designed for in-car use, would be able to buffer up enough data to make skipping very unlikely. But I couldn't be arsed. So I fucked off the £29.99 for 5 DVDRs and left.

lol thats just typical of staff in these stores! Once my friend was in PC world, and this assistant was telling a guy that the additional USB port (on a card) wouldn't work in his PC. My friend overheard, went over and said don't listen to him becuase it will work!!

We had one guy trying to explain to us about HDTV in dixons... he couldn't get the feed onto one of the TVs in the LG display part.. so me and the bf changed the channels until we found it. lol the assistant looked gobsmacked!!

I looked at those LGs and they look quite good but I am not too keen on plasma now with the new LCDs coming out and several of the big manufacturers dropping plasma altogether.

the obvious tip of the day would have been to use 2 discs back to back, so he get's a home grown 2-disc-CD-changer. 2 discs also being thick enough to avoid any skipping. for good.

Yeah the smaller LG ones were LCD and the bigger ones plasma. I think the smaller ones looked a bit better and the 50 and 60 inch TVs prolly wouldnt even fit in my living room LOL - i think the biggest was around 8k :o

38 inch Panasonic LCD here... it rocks....
Larger plasmas do still have a better picture, but only have 10 year life if your lucky... and weigh a tonne.....

LCD light as a feather so u can hang it anywhere..

Got 1 problem with the TV, and thats the background refresh...especially on footie and golf, where the grass blurrs when the camera is panning..... as soon as camera stops its pin sharp.... so something to do with the refresh rate...but told its probably the sky box, which is about 4 yrs old now...

BTW dont be too hard on the ppl at Dixons - Dixons pay peanuts so they dont get the quality of staff... Its the comapy's fault not theirs...

Also BTW our local Dixons closed down as part of the Dixons recent cull..Yippee! Mean our great little independant is really doing well..

You get what you pay for - sub £1000 42" plasmas generally have a lousy picture. But who keeps a TV for more than 10 years these days? It used to be the case that plasmas had a limited life, but current models are much better - comparable to LCD.
