View Full Version : Strong box
After the shadowslaves password file being published a couple of weeks ago, I decided to get Strongbox installed - after much searching around it seemed everyone had good stories to tell so it seemed to be the way forwards. I paid for it that day and sat back to await installation.
Now two weeks later they still haven't installed it, but of course they've debited my credit card for the $100 within a couple of days. Three days ago I mailed the strongbox owner and asked him to cancel the order and refund my card. He hasn't answered my mails or refunded my card and I'm beginning to feel a little ripped off now.
I fucking hate chargebacks, but I can't see that there's anything else I can do. Suggestions anyone?

Did you go through Ray??
He took a bit to get back to me, but I am sure he will do it.
I had it on a site and he does a great job.
I think from chatting to him, he has a lot on, but I found him of great help.

Ray knows his shit inside out but i hear hes harder to get hold of now and doesn't use ICQ anymore.
Everyone raves about SB and it worked great for a while but i had a big problem with high server loads on 2 boxes (both dual xeons) which brought them to there knees about 6 months ago.
Switched to ProxyPass (http://www.proxypass.com) and thats been running great although its $49.95 per month per server.

I'm sure he's a really cool guy - but after waiting for a fortnight for some software I urgently needed it's left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I don't want the bloody software now - just my money back so I can go purchase an alternative.

I understand. It took him about two weeks to get in touch.
May be worth a post om his forum.
I phoned him, which I found was much easer.
I thought for £50 as a one off fee, it was cheap, so was happy to hang on. Plus he poped by the site and uploaded it again when I moved servers at no cost, plus when there was an odd error he sorted iot out at no extra cost.

How did you pay him Rosie?
Rosie please email me if you're really concerned and I'll give you his phone number...
I've known Ray over 5 years and he has done all my scripts work since almost day one and he can be slow I'm sorry to say. He gets inundated with work and is a one man band.
He owes me an installation too.

Mmm never had any probs getting installs for our sites :( Hope you get hold of him soon!!
Ray is just signing up and his post should follow this one :)
Joe, thanks for your post and for contacting me.
Rosie, I have to say I'm a bit confused by your post, as well as by your
emails, to be quite frank. Perhaps I should give you a call on the phone and
try to better understand what you were wanting us to do differently or better
communicate to you why your install was delayed until this morning.
I CCed you on most of the emails I sent to your web host asking them to
take care of your DNS issues and I thought I had let you know a couple
of times that I never got any response from them. Perhaps I wasn't clear that
we don't have direct access to your DNS so there wasn't anything we could
do so long as your web host remained unresponsive, other than keep trying
to get them to take care of their end. I indicated that as soon as the DNS issues
were resolved we'd have Strongbox installed within hours. Finally I did hear
back from the tech at your hosting company, who said he had it "on my list of
things to do but I totally forgot about it. Thank you for the reminder. I'll have joel get this done"
I emailed you telling you that since they were not replying to emails I would try
calling them on the phone and see if I couldn't get them to take care of it
and also offered to refund half of the Strongbox purchase price, though waiting
so long for your host and having to email them over and over was frustrating
for us just as it was for you.
After I called them your hosting company did finally get the DNS straightened out.
The tech said they thought it was done but you had different DNS servers set with
your registrar than what they had assigned to you. As soon as the hosting
company did the DNS we had Strongbox installed within 15 minutes. That was
done at half price. I'm going to try calling you and see if I can better understand
how we could have served you better.
Ray: ICQ Number: 7-208-627
Just FYI we don't use ICQ any more because it seemed to cause a lot more customer
service issues than it solved. For one thing the "instant" part about "instant messaging"
comes at the price of the reliability of email. We can be reached at support @ bettercgi.com
or 1-979-530-1300.
Gee JoeA, you really do know everyone don't you? Guess I really need to watch what I say on this board.
Just to confirm I have just spoken to Ray - he took the time to call me - and it's all sorted out. Looks like mails both ways between Ray and I went missing, but I'm glad it has resolved. I now have a copy of Strongbox and warm fuzzy feelings about his company are now restored :)
PS to Rosie -
On second thought your emails and post are completely understandable.
You needed your problem solved quickly, it wasn't getting done, so you
were frustrated and anxious to get it taken care of ASAP. From your perspective
whether the hold up was with the host or with us probably wasn't the point,
the point was that you weren't getting what you needed. We could have done
better by getting on the phone with the host earlier or perhaps sending another
email or two to them rather than waiting a couple of days each time to see if
they would reply. We'll try to do better the next time there's a similar situation,
taking the responsibility to stay on top of the host if that's what required.
I'm glad we were finally able to get you taken care of.
Rosie .. I do know a lot of people and this comes in handy when necessary as with your prob, even though you've ignored emails from me as well recently, so I don't have warm feelings for you ! I contacted Ray as he had a prob and not because it was you...
Due to the many varied contacts I've built up over the years, PR has become a sideline of mine, and I've got quite a few UK producers promo on the biggest US gossip column site in the last couple of weeks, as an example :) If you scroll nearly all the way down here: http://www.lukeisback.com/ you'll find a little of my pr work about a party we had for some of the adult industry last Friday :)

He does come accross as a decent chap.
He must work his socks off, as I think he works on his own.
I do not envy him.
Joe I've had no emails from you. If webmaster(at)shadowslaves.com isn't working then try admin(at)dfmedia.co.uk
Rosie.. Thanks and will try again.. It could be the same prob as Ray had :)

Indeed lately I have been on my own and working my butt off.
I had one full time employee here in my office and two other guys
from another company we had a contract with to provide some
of the installation and support. My office guy is off for a month
and things didn't work out with the other company, so until I
find another person or two to hire it's just me. After the Christmas
break I'll get Robert back and probably hire two more people right
before we launch Strongbox 3.0 and some other related software
and services we have going, so we'll be able to provide better customer
support.

Oh I dunno ... Ray has come out of this with his reputation intact if not enhanced and I have my software. Happy bunnies all round I'd say.
