View Full Version : external HDD with USB & LAN
anyone using one of those? how relieable is acessing it via LAN, i plan to plug it into a switch so all networked systems can see it.
one of those for example: http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.ba88f6d7cf664718376049b291346068/?channelpath=/en_us/Products/Network%20Storage/Maxtor%20Shared%20Storage%20Family/Maxtor%20Shared%20Storage&productview=Overview
surely someone must use them?

I have that one. Ive had no problems with it, on both Mac and PC. Infact Ive just backed everything up before I go away :)
do you connect via LAN or USB though?

Got myself 3 of these Lacie's http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=10511
Can't connect directly by ethernet but had no trouble by firewire. Set the drive as shared and i can access the drives from any PC and speeds are very good - even when handling big raw AVI files through network.
finally went for this: http://www.netgear.com/products/details/SC101.php
allows me to use 2 HDDs tha tare not used at the moment and can be upgraded at any given moment. didn't think they made handy sized ones for desks.

That looks cool. I'm having networking nightmares at the moment - when we try to use wireless it drops connection all the time, and the two machines can't see each other even when hardwired via the router. Big hairy balls.
final report on the matter (unless it crashes out on me in the next days): piss easy install. flip open, insert HDD, plug in HDD cables, close, connect to LAN (through a switch in this case), connect to power, slam installation CD into CD drive, run install wizard, use.
impressed. considering the hassle the Cisco printer server caused earlier in the year, this was like flicking a light switch.

I had problem with my wireless. My neighbours car alarm was making it cut out. As soon as he bought his new car it works fine

Having my old router die turned into a blessing in disguise.
New wireless router means i can connect laptop/PSP/xbox 360 and the coverage is fantastic.
Had a crappy wireless access point before and it barely went 20 metres.
