I'm thinking of buying the dearly beloved hubbie an MP3 player thingie for Christmas - I want one with a big, er, hard drive (?) so he can put a load of his weird arse music collection on it and I can enjoy peace and quiet whilst he plugs his ears into it. I'd also like him to be able to play it in the car.

Which make do people recommend? I know nothing about MP3 players. I'm a technological ignoramus :(

My mate is a gadget fan, he says the iPod scratches. But its still the cool one.

Then again most things (inc mobile phones, pda's and so on) will play mp3's.

You can get cd players that will play the mp3 files.

If it was me, I would buy a decent PDA as it will do everything, and cost not much more than an mp3 (its what I use).

He's already overwhelmed with phone/computer type gadgets that his work give him though. I thought an MP3 player would be cool because.......er......because...... um

We got an Archos GMini for christmas to each other last year. I highly recommend it :)

It can store music, movies, pictures and any other files too, You can watch the movies on it as well with the screen and the music lets you organise it with the CD cover artwork too if you tag the files right.

and to give a more helpful reply: try to get hold of a Archos Archos Gmini XS200 series, especially the Archos Gmini XS202S Slim. the whole 200 series sports a 20GB HDD, the 202S is the slim version.

more Archos here: http://www.archos.com/

oh, interesting detail, Archos is european, french, but still better than feeding a US company like Apple.

wow, that is one hell of a site, one wonders how Archos can still be working, considering the masses blowing off steam there.

I heard the Creative MP3 players have better battery life than iPods - as nice as they are as a "lifestyle" gadget, the battery seems to be the main drawback with iPod.

I bought the ipod, because I like anything made by apple. I use it everyday when running,

I have no idea if there is a better one, but for me it does everything I want. I turn it on and it plays music, then the next day it does the same. :)

If your not after huge capacity, have a look at the solid stae mpeg3 players... I have a 1gb samsung 1, absolutely tiny, gives great sound quality, a breeze to upload/download stuff onto it...... but the plus side is I get 45 hrs use from a single AA battery!
