As webmasters most of us would be receiving cheques in USD, surely it makes sense to pay them into a USD account and then spend those dollars thus avoiding any costly exchange rates.

I mean you can buy loads of stuff in dollars - Domain names & hosting for a start.

Perhaps it's me that's dimmy.

you can with a uk credit card.

if you pay for somthing in a different country ie usa, the card takes payment in the local currency.

its the same if somone from the usa came to the uk and bought somthing. it would convert automaticly to pound.

thats my point.

So when you use your UK credit card to pay for stuff from your host or bandwidth provider in the USA, what exchange rate do they use?

I have an USD Amex which works very well for hosting and stuff that seem to process the cards offline. Its turned out to be less useful for online transactions as the dollar card / uk address or IP address seems to upset a lot of payment systems.

Citibank were personal account only, not business, when I looked a few years ago.

What you really need is a US dollars account in the US. Lower fees and you can wire using online banking - which our UK bank won't let us do.

you can open a us dollar account in many us banks without a US address. we have a disney vacation club membership and pay our annual dues monthly. in order to be able to do this then you need to have a US based account.

suntrust bank certainly do it, as thats what we did, just walked into a branch and opened a US dollar US based account.

hope this helps (something to consider on your next trip to the US)
