I tell you were there is going to be money to be made from today (5th Dec 2005), gay marriages and anything connected to them.
Just look how much people spend on normal marriages. And often gay men have more cash. So there is clearly money to be made.
I bet the divers lawyers are already gearing up for gay divorces.

It will cost you more than 40k, but if I had the money, I think I would open an adult DVD shop.
I think thats were the money is.
To be honest I am suprised some of the big music/film shops have not started an adult (r18) section, simply as cd sales drop.
After all Boots has started to sell sex toys.

It actually shouldnt cost more than 40K unless you want to go City Centre / High Street as I investigated it a few months back but the problem is my local councils attitude to anything adult plus the fact that they want a 5k non refundable application fee which they keep even when (oops, if) they decide to reject the application - havent looked around at other areas but would prefer somewhere local (i.e East Mids) where I can keep an eye on things so might look into that in the New Year.

I thought the licence was 40k or somthing silly lke that.
Varies from council to council and it *may* be something syupid like that in parts of London for example (but I honestly dount it) but most councils charge around about the 5k mark whihc is still a huge amount for what it actually is.

Homer Simpson got ordained as a Minister on the internet & started doing gay marriages. Of course it all went wrong with hillarious consequences but everything worked out in the end.

In the USA the law lets people become ministers, but do not think its the same in the UK.
For instance I have relatives that are Mormans. They get married at a Morman wedding, but then have to go to a regersty office as the Mormon wedding is not recognised in UK law.
But such as gay wedding plannings, gay stag nights and so on, there is a big market.
Just think about how much people do spend on weddings and all the things that go with them. Then think pink pound (as in gay men can have more cash).
Also Lesbian weddings and so on.
Lets face it, if you live in Brighton, you will have tons of clients.

5K is worth it.
Open a nice shop (not sleazy), stay open late.
Good location.
Then I think its a good way to make cash.

Look into the licencing laws and you will find that the 5K is at huge risk with the attitudes most councils have to sex shops. You wont be able to open a "nice" shop as you have to abide by all the laws about double doors, blacked out windows and no signs etc - if the location is anywhere near a school, a church or a built up housing area it will most likely be rejected and the council will also put restrictions on your opening hours etc. Its like Nazi fucking Germany 70 years ago - not saying its not something I will consider again but its not something you rush into!!

A licence is needed to sell R18 They are never going to grant a licence in a shop where under 18s also shop
You would soon lose your £40K trying to sell R18 DVDs its not an easy market and dying fast as new technology takes over

You say this, but in Leeds its clear what the sex shops are. A new one has been open a while. Its open and friendly. The DVD part is downstairs.
I still think even is you comply by the rules you still can have a nice shop with a bit of emagination.
I think Ann Summers now sells R18 films.
You simply have to think about it carfully.

A shop such as HMV could easily open an only adult shop.
DVD's dying out. Not a chance. What is replacing them? If your going to tell me that people will prefer to download film rather than buy them, not a chance.
The problem at the moment is that its far easer (and probably cheaer) to buy dvd's from the net.
Just look at last month, the chinese mafia in scotland were found with 2 million pounds worth of pirated dvd porn.
DVD porn is not dead, its just not got a chance in the UK to start. Lets face it, most people still think porn in the UK is illigal.

That is why DVD is dead.
I dont believe DVD porn to be dead at all and this is something I do have experience of but thats another issue - the main issue is getting a licence and after wasting a lot of time and effort a few months back I dont think its do able where I live hence not having moved on this as yet.

DVD porn (r18) is not dead at all.
People simply buy illigall copies or from the net.
People simply do not want to go into a sex shop, or even belive they can buy r18 in the UK.
If the law changed, r18 sales would rocket.
They would sell like crazy mail order.
With HD DVD if anuything DVD sales will increase.
What will replace DVD? Well at the moment nothing.
But we may see a break-away. As I say boots has started to sell sex toys. Its only a matter of time that a chain of shops will work out that if it can set up a section in its shops, to sell r18 dvd's and comply by the law, then there would be a market to do so. It may even come down to them selling outside the law, as they did with sunday shopping, if they feel its worth a legal fight.
But the daft thing at the moment is that as the law stands, you are almost better of simply pirating porn dvds and selling them black market, say at a car boot sale.
What will replace DVD?
Downloadable HD DVD.
That is what ADSL2 is all about.
Or do you think they are going to keep putting on grubby macs and walking into a back street sex shop?

No
I think people will simply order from the net.
Do I think people will spend all day downloading a huge file? No.
Do I think people will want to pay to download a huge file that costs the same than a dvd? No.
You can buy DVD porn so cheap off the net, with all the extras on a dvd, why would anyone pay to download big files.
Sure some will. But to sugest more people will pay to download big film files than simply order a dvd which they can keep for life is a silly thing to say.

Even this new net TV, it sounds like I cannot save the film.
No

Our servers are running 24/7 with people downloading DVDs already and have been for months. ADSL2 isn't even available yet.
Would I swap our level of daily sign-ups (not counting recurring memebers) with a video shop of *any* kind? Hell no, not in a million years.

Also there is a new generation of people.
Its no longer 'dirty old men' who go into sex shops.
I spent a day at a friends shop just to see who the customers were. A lot were young couples (not single men, but boy and girl). This new generation has no problem going to sex shops. In fact confident about there sexuality.

There are lots of sites where you can download whole movies (or in most cases actually just the scenes but thats what people want anyway) and then, if you convert them, you can copy them to DVD - IPTV is primarily about delivering content over IP to a television, not to a PC, and the plan for most providers I would imagine is to use some sort of DRM to stop people from doing exactly what you have said.

Try telling that to the local councils and the do gooders who object for no good reason - they are convinced that all the people who frequent sex shops are kiddy fiddling deviants who are a menace to their society and lifestyle and thats the greatest challenge faced by anyone wanting to open a sex shop.

So your selling DVD's that you could also buy in a shop?
Or are you simply selling a downloadable film? There is a big difference.
On my sites I now have full films (up to 40 mins) than you can download.
A DVD film is a different matter, it has to be in full. And at least 1 hour long. Thats in a formt that I can put onto a dvd and play in a dvd player.
If your telling me its simply a wmv film, then its not a dvd film.
To replace DVD buying, you need to be able to select a DVD film (say the new Pirates porn film), and download it off the net and onto a blank dvd. If not, then you have not replaced porn dvd. You simply have a film file that you can watch on your pc. Not much use if I want to watch it on my HD plasma tv.

Film clips are much different. I have had film clips on my sites for years.
Unless you can download a dvd, you cannot claim to replace it.
And you aint going to make people think, great stuff, could buy a dvd, with all ythe extras, play it whenever I want on my HD Plasma tv, but no, I want small film files that are cut up, to play on my pc, but even better they may have DRM so I can only watch them once.
Sorry, that aint going to replace DVD's at all.
All I know are that sex shops here in AU are all phasing out the vhs in favour of the adult dvds. Xrated dvd sales are pumping and adult shops are poping up faster then MacD's or starbucks, esp over the last few years. Also a lot of places such as HMV, Sanity, etc etc are all stocking R18+ adult orientated dvd's on the same shelves as all the regular non adult titles.
I dunno if it's same as in UK but you can put R18+ which is no penetration in the same stores as everything else. Xrated is with pen but has to be in adult only stores.

I have to agree that downloading/internet is the way forward with broadband becoming faster and cheaper.
Its "instant" access, cheaper and more discreet and i don't even have to leave home.
And then theres the matter of choice which i don't have with R18.
I could visit any site at my own leisure whenever i wanted to and check out free pics/movies and make a choice of the 1000s of sites online.
Hell, if i ever wanted to go to a sex shop, i would have to travel at least 15 miles to my nearest city and once there wouldn't know where the shop is.
As for going in...
The bottom line is that for every one person that will happily walk into a sex shop to buy anything at all he is outnumbered by at least a thousand others (and I am being *very* conservative) that wouldn’t be seen dead in one. Plus a lot of the world doesn’t even live near a sex shop anyway. All websites have to do is pick up a very small fraction of those people to be streets ahead.
There are online DVD stores but porn is an impulse buy so even if you have to spend an hour downloading its infinitely better than putting in an order and then sitting with your trousers down by your ankles until the postman turns up a week later.
Some people will still want hard copy printed cover DVDs and they always will. We just cater for the rest of the world who are horny and want to jerk off. Do the sums.

Im not disagreeing per se but believe me as impulsive as it might be for some if online porn was legal in the UK and therefore we lost the cowboys and gained some decent companies with a good understanding of what customer service entails that whole market would change overnight - at the moment most people have to pay £25 for an R18 DVD mail order and wait weeks for it to be delivered from abroad which puts most off. If, on the other hand, it was legal to sell mail order and a company could offer good prices and next day delivery like the non adult DVD companies do then it would greatly bolster the DVD market in the UK but thats a lot of ifs!!
From a purely personal viewpoint I have 100's of gigs of downloaded porn yet I would still much prefer to watch a porn DVD on my big screen telly while sitting on my sofa rather than watch it on my computer sitting on an office chair and I suspect many others are the same and maybe thats where IPTV will score big in the coming months.

Yes a lot of "if's" and punters are voting with their feet. Our signups are growing year on year as broadband becomes available across the world.
Hopefully IPTV will take off and we have interesting times ahead.
Just goes to show how stupid the government here are though - the amount of income tax and VAT they are missing out on by restricting trade and encouraging people to either spend their money with overseas DVD companies or online where a lot (but not all so dont jump down my throat) dont bother with such trivialities either as they are not in UK or as they are just dont bother!

I will let you into a little secret. When we made our LS – Volume 1 we had Peter at Strand make us up an order of 200 complete with the printed cover (as previous post) and a graphic on the DVD itself and then we decided to give them away free to anyone subscribing to Lady-Sonia.com who requested one. We made a big splash about this on the members welcome page, we offered to pay all of the P&P (UK, US or wherever) and all they had to do was let us have their subscription ID and delivery address. We get about 200 to 250 new signups a day at Lady-Sonia.com and it still took us almost 3 months to get rid of them (Vic our studio manager will confirm this) and even then we were giving them away in handfuls to other people and sites to give away as promos too.

I am suprised more sites do not do this.

Might be different for other sites but ours just were not interested. Most join for a sneaky wank when the wife is out and the last thing they need is a DVD turning up.

Thanks for the info SGS - we've been toying with the idea of putting out a Flashers DVD for a couple of years now - obviously not worth the time or money

We have several years to go back over month on month / week on week and we religiously compare these figures anyway and I can categorically confirm that in our case with this I don’t believe that we made one more sale over the three weeks to the month that we had this running and it had zero effect on retention either.
DVD punters and subscription site punters are two different types of people. Just pleased that the subscription site punters outnumber the rest by several thousand to one.
