Can any recommend any good free software for working with movies. I have some clips I'd like to do some basic things with, joining/splitting/adding titles. I've not got many to do so it's not worth buying anything yet.

This is not free but very cheap video charge (http://videocharge.com/) but its so simple and easy to use. Its great for doing almost anything with movies.
