Managed to get myself a cracking virus, had to format and re-install XP. Now I have the fun of installing multiple programs, including the delicious task of entering my list of about 150 sponsors into stats remote. Though I'm no longer going to be at the same icq number as that particular password got lost about 5 years ago.
Luckily I bought that external backup drive about 3 weeks ago or I'd have been doing my nut :)
To do before xmas '09: get anti-virus program :D

This (http://tech.yahoo.com/blog/null/5244) would suggest that it isn't. Why would you go for a free solution anyway on such an important tool?

Just my opinion after being in the industry both retail and support previously and have found most of the paid for anti-virus software to pick up false threats and generally churn pc's to halt.
Have you ever had to uninstal norton on 20 machines ? So much fun !
Avg have a paid version too for commercial use.
I have seen these reviews before and to be honest no anti virus software is 100%.
Also Jel any idea where you got the virus from ?

Mayne things have improved in the two since that was written.

I agree, in fact I dont think its the best free anti virus, I think its the best anti virus, all the others end up slowing machines down in my experience.
You can dig up articles on all the anti virus software saying they are bad because.... on thousands of sites..... So you have to go with what works for you and avg works the best for me.
I would never put Norcunts or McCuntfee on a machine ever again
It was the antivirus xp virus, which apparently is a rootkit, and which also apparently avg (amongst others) doesn't detect. I actually moved house yesterday, and was just surfing away in the morning with my coffee & cig etc when I knew something was up. Couldn't lose the window, nor ctr/alt/delete so just smacked the reset button, by which time it was too late (of sorts).
On reboot I got the usual blurb 'your pc is at risk, click here to install', with no close icon, or fuck all, and right clicking the box or the little title thing in the toolbar at the bottom wouldn't allow me to close it. I booted in safe mode, removed the dodgy looking new folders, but whatever I did, it was still there on reboot. I couldn't do anything, not even browse, so, getting annoyed as fuck, thought right well I'll install it then, and then get rid of it.
Because I'd sort of fucked about, and not removed stuf in the right order, even on getting rid of it from my system as far as I was able to see, there was obviously some other shit there, and I couldn't be arsed with doing a HJT log etc. I'd found the XP disc about 2 days before when packing some stuff away, so got it and thought right I'll just do a fresh install.
The hilarious part: I thought my external drive backed up all my program files as well as all my documents. I'd had a few niggly probs for a while, so thought bollocks, I may as well format, start from scratch, and back everything up from the external drive.
'oh dearie me' were the exact words I think I probably used when I completed the XP install and plugged in the backup drive. Been saying 'oh dearie me', slightly more vehemently each time, since about 7pm last night.
