No, moments after the big bang. Nothing existed before the big bang (apparently) so its the Higgs particle (the God particle?) they are trying to isolate, which appeared after the big bang.

But surely there must have been something, otherwise what could cause the big bang? I mean, if there was nothing, then that means there was not anything, no particles, no God, no Higgs whatsits, no nothing. That means there wouldn't even have been any space or anything, because even space with nothing in it is still something, so....

Anyway....

I have heard it said that nothing can be better than complete happiness, and a ham sandwich is always better than nothing, so a ham sandwich could, under certain circumstances, be better than complete happiness. That's my theory about it all.

Er.. in the beginning there was the sandwich, and the sandwich said let there be filling and the sandwich saw it was good... and er, everything followed after that.. fuck, I'm pissed on Tenants, honestly (hic)!

Yes I keep hearing scientists saying it probably shouldn't destroy the whole planet, I keep thinking to my self, if there is any chance at all of it destroying the whole planet, maybe we should not chance it

When a quantum physicist says "probably" you can bet he is talking odds of trillions to one against rather than a 10/1 punt.

And if it does go wrong, we will probably never have known about it as it will fuck up the spacetime continuum meaning we will never have existed, even though we did the thing that caused us not to exist in the first place - classic quantum paradox.

Either that or Dr Who will get collided into reality and save the day :reading:

That makes me wonder how many other things there ever were that never existed because they made the thing happen that caused them not to exist, and we never knew about it because they've never existed.

If you think thats bad you should read this http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1998/02/980227055013.htm

Basically it says " One of the most bizarre premises of quantum theory, which has long fascinated philosophers and physicists alike, states that by the very act of watching, the observer affects the observed reality. "

So what else happens differently if we dont watch ?

Does DVt take photos of hot girls its just we never see them ?

Does Jerry actually drive a big hummer jeep with a confederate flag on the roof around town but if you look at him he turns into cy*#ist ?

Oh the comments on the Daily mail are just wonderful

I have no idea what possible benefits to mankind this will produce. 90% of us couldn't care less about physics - we just rather like our earth and get a mite annoyed with scientists who think they are God messing with stuff they themselves admit that they cannot begin to understand. Arrogance has always been mankind's downfall - and these scientists are arrogant beyond belief! If there is a minor chance it could cause problems that, being human, they cannot control, then they should not proceed - its all making me very very angry.

- Anna, England, 9/9/2008 12:29

I respect Mr Hawking, but on this occasion, this is a step too far... are we going to continue believing in God or are the world's scientists going to try and prove there's no such thing? Already more and more people are turning away from faith to believe in the small minds of humans.
I watched the man who designed this theory on TV yesterday, he's a lovely gentleman and I hope he doesn't live to regret his research. The problem with good ideas and theories in todays age is those with power and lesser minds will grasp the concepts and abuse these ideas by putting them towards defence and profiteering.
Unfortunately I hope the best ideas are never shared and will die with the genius who thought of them,
May the Lord be with us tomorrow, in a time of peace, mankind and quacks will seek opportunity and recognition and worse of all we continue do this in the centre of our own world when so many planets are vacant.
How dare you play with our lives, how dare you!

9.33 am local time, cheering as a blip on a screen alerts scientists to the fact that the first sample passed the 3 km mark.

10.28 am local time, even louder cheering as a double blip tells that the first sample has travelled the full 27 km around the tunnel, which was expected to take hours.

hang on, they couldn't even calculate how long the sample would travel?

i already feel great confidence that all other predictions are just as spot on.

there is absolutely nothing to fear, everything is under control. :minister:
