One of our sites has 225k WMV's (chopped into 6 files per movie) along with better quality 700k WMV's.

Everyone seems to go for the higher quality movies though so we only do higher quality for all other sites.

No member has ever contacted me asking for lower quality/smaller files.

If they take an extra hour or so to download then so be it. They have at least 30 days to get them :)

My thought is if people only have dial up, then its (a) as they cannot afford broadband, or (b) they hardly use the net.

As such are these people going to join your site.

That said, even when I was on dial up, I would be still happy to download large files even if it took an hour or so, for somthing I can download in minutes now.

I think its better to offer dial up (if you must) flash films, as you get the quality of a broadband film but much smaller size file.

Broadband only for about 2 years and although we give them both Mpeg and WMV9 we are going to be going 100% WMV9 in a few weeks time as only about 2% of our subscriber downloads of choice are Mpeg now.

All of our *big* downloads (1 gig plus) have all been WMV9 only for several months now with zero issues from subscribers.

Jt...

Yup.. Most of them are now.. People are getting faster and higher quality pc's and connections.. Look at Bulldog etc. So I'm making better quality vids for the members area..

If you go to most US based on line film/vid/dvd stores they are offering downloadable Dvds within days of the Dvd being released at around $10 for a week.. We've got to compete with that a lot more in the near future...

WMV9 is definately the way to go. Thats all we use and no complaints. WMV9 is as good if not better than MPEG/AVI now. Nice file size as well for surfers.

Yes, "9" was the turning point for us.

The problem with Pinnacle is theres few options when you export to WMV.

I presume you mean Pinnacle Studio.

I was going to get the latet version, but I have read posts about a lot of bugs.

But I only do wmv files as they seem good quality and small files.

I tried to use Pinnacle studio to make divx (http://www.divx.com/) films, but these seemed bigger than wmv files, yet I think they should be smaller.

Also Mac's can now play wmv files. Plus you can play them on most (if not all) windows portable machnes, inc PDA's (not sure about the phones).

I would now say its a standered format now.

Guys...

I just remembered I downloaded the WMV9 programme ages ago but it gave me too many choices of output quality so I gave it a miss.. What do you set the end product to for downloading..

File Download (Computer Playback) or Web Server (Progressive Download) ? Then...

What encoding options ? as it goes from VHS to Dvd 5Mbs..

It's all too much for my sad and tired old brain.. LOL

Thanks and as I have a new vid to get ready for an update, I'd like to try this out

Generally (and I do mean generally) = Large broadband file download option, 1000 + kbps (we do some at 2000 kbps) 640 x 480 screen size. It’s a matter of tweeking it from there.

I use 1100 now for mpgs and I noticed that above that there isn't much difference :)

But thanks for that.. I'll try it later..

(c) broadband simply isn't available for them.

and i fail to see what's wrong with someone rarely using the net jopining your site? what more can you wish for than someone paying and not causing any load to the server?

It makes a difference with some of the more modern cards and when you "full screen" them.

Nothing wrong with that at all as money is money but we just found it more profitable to go after the broadband market.

I think its worth doing smaller clips for the dialupers, doesnt take long to do and all money is money :)

We have both mpeg2 and WMV but like Johny says, you often get members saying they cant view the mpeg 2

We cut the broadband versions into 1 minute bits for them and this seems to be the best of both worlds.

I went for 1500kbps WMV at 512x384 for my new stuff
with a 300kbps 320x240 alternative

dial-up users could probably download the 300kb movies and watch them i don't think its worth streaming for modem anything under 100kbps just looks shit

We only go for broadband users. actually thinking of just for 1mb upwards
WMV9 1500 BR and at a size of 1024x768.. going for the best quality we can and as we are doing HDV now its the way to go

if they only have dial-up or even just 512 broadband now...
whats the chances they have credit cards with disposable income....Its a big enough market to fuck a few off

1 minute clips !!!! How long are your vids.. Mine are up to 30 mins long and so that would be impossible for me to do.. Some of my samples are 1 minute on the affiliate galleries and that's ok to do, but a full lengtrh vid.....aaaghhhhhh
