question:
do i hneed to bother.
i set up the bogs simply so i could then ignore them.
ie no work.
now i find it wants upgrading.
that looks like a whole lot of work.
also can they be hacked easily.
somone requested the password for one of my blogs.
i hope i do not find some birk messing them up as they will get a smack in the kisser if i find out who it is.

do I need to bother? - you started a thread within the last 10 days asking the exact same question, people took the time to respond to you in that thread, maybe the answer lies there!
also can they be hacked easily? - yes, especially when exploits are found and then posted all over the web. It's like a lot of this type of thing though. It just takes someone to be bothered to look for a vulnerabilty to exploit, Wordpress isn't unique, Movable Type likely has them, Typepad likely has them Blogs Organiser likely has them, the list goes on.

I think Kaktus would rip your throat out by implying Blogs Organiser can be compromised........
He says, he has never had an instance of BO being breached..

I'm not trying to imply that it can be compromised, apologies if that is the way it looks. I am trying to generalise by saying that software in the public domain is a target and if someone wants to get in then they generally will.
I did edit my post to say 'likely'.

BO isn't open source.
Yeah I know that, that's not what i mean by public domain, I just mean out there, open to scrutiny.
I don't think Movable Type is either tbh.
I wasn't commenting on the public domain. I was only pointing out the BO isn't open source, which, while not in any way shape or form a guarantee, does remove it from the front line, because your average script kiddie cannot just download, open it, and scrutinise it for holes to exploit.
Plus the installation is in one place rather than on the actual blog itself. So the installation/admin isn't as easy to find as the other blog softwares as it won't necessarily even be on the same server as the blog/s.
Movable Type was re-launched as open source last year.
The scripts with the biggest security problems are the open source ones.

all i wanted to know was how do i update?
1. Backup(Files + MySQL database)
2. Overwrite your old blog files with new ones on the server
3. Visit yourblog/wp-admin/ to see if it asks to upgrade the database
4. Check if anything is broken, if it is ok then you are done.

i think there is actually and auto updater for wordpress.
Check out wordpress.org
If an update is released it always pays to do that update, It normally fixes bugs/holes in the script to prevent exploits.

so in a nutshell do i simply drap accross the new wordpress and overright the original files or is it more technical?

also how often will these updates happen.
its going to be a right geezer (pain in the arse) to do it each week.
be prepared to upgrade them every week :)

Its a long walk to Dixons from his house
Fair play, but Id have thought the concept of him hiding in a neighbour's bushes, peeking thru their window, was more likely...

talent shows or for mindlless witless wonders.
i am great.
i do not belive that the soon to be president of England should degrade himself on such shows.
Ileve that sort of thing to pesents.

Yes, you overwrite the original files. If you want to be really pedantic then you can first delete the original files and then copy over the new ones.
also how often will these updates happen.

Right now it seems like 5-6 updates a year.. not much at all actually and you can skip some updates that are just bug fixes(not vulnerability fixes) like the latest Wordpress version is. It seems they now got into habit of letting everyone know too if we should definitely upgrade now or only if we think it gives us something.

Yes, you overwrite the original files.
But watch out for the wp-content folder, and depending on what plug-ins you are using, the wp-admin folder as well.

Except you don't delete all the files, only the ones that you need to delete.

Oh yeah, watch out for wp-content... it shouldn't really mess up anything in there.. it overwrites 2 of the default themes, which nobody hopefully uses anyway and akismet and some dummy plugin I think.
Dunno what you mean by wp-admin as plugins are in wp-content/plugins.. you shouldn't really worry about overwriting wp-admin as if you have modified anything in there then these are probably hacks anyway and in such case you know what you are doing :)
Yeah, don't delete wp-content, lol :) Thats why I said backup first :geek:
PS Don't delete wp-config.php and .htaccess either.. doh :)

Some plug-ins require the addition of files in wp-admin, I have at least one (http://fredfred.net/skriker/index.php/iimage-browser/) that utilises wp-admin on most of my installs.
...you know what you are doing :) It is DVT we are giving guidance here to remember. He has been given the info a couple of times now but I don't think he has grasped it yet :)
