Hi all,
I'm looking for a new dedicated server and wonder if anyone can recommend a company with fast bandwidth and good customer service.
I'm with Leaseweb at the moment - blistering speed - sadly let down by their customer service!
Ideally USA based (no VAT).
Can anyone tell me the right questions to ask these hosting guys? 'Cos it's IT I always feel I'm getting bullshitted.
Do I want a server with 100mbps upload link? T1 connection? or something else?
Cheers, Russell
Depends what you want it for I suppose

see signature! :) helped me out no end :)
I can never ever recommend Mojo enough. Get in touch with Brad there and he will take the time to explain what everything means, what you need and he won't sell you more than you need. He is a great, great guy.

WoW - to have 3 webmasters recommend a service (and be in agreement) is good enough for me.
I'm contacting them now.
Many thanks.

Make sure to do your own research as well. Just because a couple webmasters recommend a host doesn’t make them right for you. There are a LOT of adult webmaster boards, and a search feature on all of them.

Hello Russell,
Some of the information I would suggest seeking out when looking for a new host include:
1. Is there support staff available 24/7
2. See if you can submit a ticket to them in advance of taking service and perhaps even ask there support staff a question that is important to you and see how it is answered.
3. Do they have a physical address and NON-800 phone number available for you to reach them at. Sorry but over the years I have seen too many hosts that disappear and one of the the first things cut when there are financial problems is an 800#.
4. Know what you are looking for or expecting from your hosting:
a. What support functions are important to you
b. Is there method of communications acceptable to you
5. If you are doing adult, then choose an adult friendly host, in the end it will be worth it to you both in support and performance.
6. How do they measure bandwidth utilization (average vs 95th percentile can be significant to you).
7. How are overages handled?
8. What kind of hardware do they deploy both for the network and servers.
9. How long have they been in business and how large is there staff.
10. References, as you already noted can be important indicators.
11. Do you want or even care if you have a direct contact?
12. How do they handle upgrades?
13. Read the TOS and AUP of the hosts on your short list.
Seeking out a host that meets or exceeds your expectations, delivers a stable and fast environment for both you and your clients is one of the most important steps in developing your online presence. Don't skimp with the foundation and cornerstone of your business. Once you have a short list of hosts you like then set your budget and from there apply that budget to what gets you the most bang for your buck.
The hosts that were mentioned earlier in this thread are all very reputable and offer good choices, at the same time I would certainly like the chance to earn your business. Hit me up directly about what Caro.Net (http://www.Caro.Net) can offer you and what incentives, specials, and other reason might make us the choice for you!
Good luck with your search and if you have any additional hosting questions (no matter whom you choose) feel free to contact me and I will always do my best to get the answers for you.

Many thanks for all the info - it's been a great help.
Bin adult webmastering now for 10 years and still don't feel confident around/with servers. They always seem to bite me in the arse!
Russell (webmaster for whichpornstar.co.uk & thenude.eu) - am I allowed that bit o'spam?

Hi Russell, I know that Hostgator give a choice to upgrade to more mbps, the basic packages are on 10mbps but I for instance pay extra to have 100mpbs.
You shall probably find most do this... & its not much money!
good luck!
