for somone like me an increase in gas and electricity is not going to be a big problem, as i will only have the light on in the room i am in and use the washer once or so a week.

But for big families with the washer on each day and baths and stuff, its going to be a dam expensive time.

Even those with a good wage are going to find it much harder.

But Iwould say traditionaly its the poor who have big families they are going to get hit hard.

I have already heard people say that in winter they may struggle to buy food.

I wonder if we could even see people starve or freeze in the uk.

how come?

mine is £17 electricity and £25 for gas.

its set that each month.

but in summer i do not use the gas, as i just take showers and tend to eat salad.

for electricity its mainly the pc thats on all day and a small portable tv and just a 'green' electric builb.

and a shower each day.

i do wonder if some people have dodgy meters that give incorrect readings.

I have a 7 bedroom house so I would expect it to be higher than yours but paying nearly a £10,000 a year is a crazy amount....

do you have the heating on full on all the time.

i do not think its costs that much for a statley home.

Get rid of one of the heated swimming pools!

Funny thing is I had one in my last house and my gas bills were never what they are now but that was before it all went mental....

I reckon we heat the house just like anyone else does. Ok, its a big place but I queried it with the suppliers and they checked the meters etc and confirmed we were using what we are being billed for so, it's either pay up or freeze and live in the dark......

that makes no sense. thats like £100 per room each month.

No way.

Somthing is wrong there.

I think if I was you I would get a new heater as it will save you a ton. I wonder if you have a leak.

I would ask others who live near you with the same size house what there bills are.

I presume your heating with gas with standered radiators.

And I presume your double glased.

Or is it oil, as I know that method is getting expensive.

Lol, does anyone remember an episode of Bottom on this very theme?

I would check someone has not compromised your supply outside and is siphoning off all your gas :noway2:

i was thinking that, but if its a 7 bedroom house i would guess its not next to another house.

I do not think its possible to use £800 a month of gas. You must have to have the gas on fll and the cooker, 24/7. And even then.

I think I have worked out why the bills are big.

You live in a 7 room hostel.

And thats the problem going cold turkey, you need the heat on full.

easy way of beating the gas bills - one month it goes one way, the follow month the other way ;o)

Only problem here I don't have have a gas meter - just a sod great gas tank at the bottom of the garden thats running at around £2000 a year in gas - Electricity with a bloody great pool & pond running 4 pumps I don't want to think about but as least the account has some how got me claiming 100% house bills against the company tax - bonus

You do make me laugh (honestly!)

Having 7 bedrooms doesn't mean I have only 7 rooms... I have another 10 to heat (yes we have a kitchen etc like other people!) and the £800 a month is gas AND electric....

The whole house was refurbished (and literally rebuilt) over the past couple of years so we have 2 new boilers, new electrics, new pipes etc etc.. I think its just a fact of life that gas and electric have now reached these prices....

i think i would get somone to check your system out.

i have heard of big houses using oil and having big bills. but even then they are not as big as yours, and these are very large farm houses in the middle of no where.

or very least i would be getting one of those wind turbines to generate some of the electricity.

but i would have your system looked at, as i bet hotels do not have such high bills.

and yes i gathered you had other rooms to heat.

i presume your south of england and not on a small scotish iland as north as you can get.

i would also be looking to change your gas supplier. i bet at what your paying you may even get a deal.

In the grand scheme of things it won't bankrupt me but out of principle I think it's taking the piss.....

But anyway, my house is up for sale now and I'm moving to pastures new so it's all a bit academic!

I wonder if we could even see people starve or freeze in the uk.

Get out in London and you see it ahppen quite a bit. I stil work for a charity shelter and what you see is frightening stuff at times in a rich country. All the more scary because the myth that homeless people 'bring it on themselves' is - well - its a myth.

I have seen people on the streets after marriage break ups, redundancy and various other things - A lot of people will as a rule be on the streets within about 90 days if they cant find work. Lose your job so you cant pay the rent, landlord kicks you out so you have no address - very hard to find work with no fixed abode, these days councils will at best shove you in a hostel if your single - same problems - no one will employ you living in a hostel so you spiral down and believe me I have seen people ho were earning shedloads find themselves on the street.

The saddest is people who are ex-services quite often treated terribly.

So yeah - peple do starve, freeze, end up alcholoic - its more often the case that they rurn to drink to numb the pain rather than get drunk and piss up their lives.
