So, most mainstream B2C emails get 2-12% CTR. (http://www.emaillabs.com/email_marketing_articles/average_email_click_through_rate.html)

My clients are getting an average of 37.3% CTR.

Why? Because I make them build a clean, double opt in list. I actually have surfers COMPLAIN if they don't get their weekly newsletter. Imagine that! Sending promotional email that people actually WANT to get.

It's straightforward enough to do.

Work out that your email should be in 3 sections. a) member acquisition b) member retention and c) cancelled member re-activation.

Work out a strategy for those three sections.

1) Start building up a clean list for a) member aquisition today. Mail them what you said you would. Do not ever, ever spam them, or trade that data.

2) Start emailing them and test subject lines, display names and content. What gets opened? Why? What gets clicked on? Why? With this intelligence, tweak the newsletter all the time to get improvement on these stats.

3) Profit

Getting people to put their hands up and actually ASK for your email marketing WILL get you astounding open rates and click through rates.

It's the most effective return on investment of any marketing activity.

If you aren't taking email seriously, you are a silly billy.

I would if I knew how to set up a double opt in so they get automatic confirmation email ect...my hosts allow email marketing too :) (but suggested double opt in was way to go) :)

www.phplist.com is a ok starter email solution, is free and easy to use. However, the problem you will face is delivery. If your host 'allows' email marketing, I imagine their IP ranges are on all kinds of blacklists and stuff. Worth a go though.

Getting the email actually in someone's inbox is the next hurdle, after you realise you should be doing email properly.

Look at bighip.....

As an subjective viewpoint on this I used bighip for a while. I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

a) no service whatsoever - weeks went by without a reply to my emails (there is no number you can call) and when the replies came they didn't answer my questions

b) appalling delivery - they really cannot get emails to people's inboxes. I imagine this is because they are blacklisted

c) very poor reporting

d) no segmentation options (ie segment your list into cancelled, members and non members to send them appropriate content)

e) AARGH THEY ARE SHIT

:D

Hope that impartial and subjective view helped.
