I have client who wants a message board/forum. I've used phpBB in the past and it's been OK; and obviously we're on vBulletin here. So what do folk recommend and why? Cheers.

I have had a phpbbb forum since 2002 but intend to switch to vbulletin sometime.

I find phpbb pretty much outdated now, but since my surfers are not always webmasters and thus not that Internet savvy it is easier for them to use than vbulletin. Unmodded phpbb is like a magnet for spam too but there are a couple of mods you can use to cut this right down.

Obviously, Vbulletin is not free though. If you're looking for free then SMF (simple machines forum) is another one you might consider.

There's a simple phpbb mod that kills all the spam signups.

It's all in the new admin area.

You stop people posting till approved and can block them from posting links.

Plus Capcha makes it easier.

Your talking phpBB 3 ? If so Im still on 2... Never bothered to upgrade as I got fed up with trying to stop the spam and just left it... So is it worth upgrading to 3? and, if so, does it do so invisibly, allowing you to use the same modded theme etc?

It was worth it and it only needs you to install it and it works fine.
