My main pc is giving me grief - namely freezing/locking up randomly...

I've checked pretty much all I can think of, cleaned all the fans & heatsink, defragged, tried running it with the case off & cooled with a desktop fan (as I was convinced it was over-heating) ... done full virus scans with couple different progs .. updated drivers inc gfx card ..

Doesnt seem to matter if its doing anything intensive when it crashes - just totally random.

Anything else I can check before I sling the fucker out the window? :comp:

First thing to check is whether you have changed anything recently like something in the settings or if you added new software or new hardware. If you have then try removing that or changing it back and see if it still happens.

If it does then its either a faulty piece of hardware (could be memory, processor or your hard drive) or the operating system needs reinstalling - if its under warranty then let them sort it but, if not, easiest one to do is the reinstall but MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP ANYTHING IMPORTANT FIRST (you have been warned lol :)

Having worked in IT support, sales and consultancy for all of my working life its amazing what a difference a reinstall of the OS can make - I now do a complete reinstall and rebuild at least once every 6 months even if Im not having problems. It just makes such an overall difference to the speed of the system not to mention removing all those little shitty programs and things that we all install and try and remove but which insist on hanging around like a bad smell!!

Just buy another computer you tight arse. Computers are a load of wank, held together with technology that doesnt really work and programs that have been cobbled together.

There is no way I would fuck around with a computer. Once every six months I just buy a new one. There so cheap these days I cant see any point in fucking around.

Plus your loaded you tight arse. Time to spend some of your millions on your businesses main tool

If you have a recovery disk, just back up and use that. Should be back up and running in an hour or so. Just done it myself this morning.

Are you running more than one virus scanner?

If you are they will fight each other and shut down your pc.

Only have one running.

Simply disable the others.

Virus programs. Be careful, as its not worth running more than one program on your pc. Sometimes two virus scanners can conflict and can shut your pc down. So I suggest just to use one. Its also important to have it up-to-date. One program I recommend is AVG. You can download a free version of this which is excellent. Keep checking at least once a week for updates. See www.grisoft.com (http://www.grisoft.com/).

I agree with above reinstall OS every 6 months and keep EVERYTHING on external drives

What are you using it for? Just admin stuff or are you doing video editing and graphics and stuff? Do you play games on it? Any special requirements at all?

yeah I want it to be reasonably high-end ... budget could be about £1800 say .... Although I dont play games that much anymore I certainly want the ability to do so ... what's the score with PCIe gfx cards - gonna be the norm in the future?

Fucking hell at £1800 the sky is the limit - I doubt many companies could sell you a computer for more than that sort of money any more!

PCIe is just another (all be it new) way of cards talking to the computer - its faster than AGP and certainly old PCI so for gaming it will make a difference though now its not realy noticeable. It definately is the way of the future.

For that sort of money look at the new dual core systems.

Obviously I'd sooner spend less, but looking at the Alienware website the other day that seemed like an average figure for something pretty groovy - which is why I asked on here a few days ago if you pay for the brand/name more than anything as far as alienware goes .. ;)

Got any good recommendations of places to check out/buy online?

You can try the usual suspects like Dell and people like that but if I was in the market for a pre built one I would go for one of the smaller UK companies like Mesh - they always get great reviews in the IT press and have some great deals and specs of machines. Also they tend to use less proprietary parts etc so if you do need to upgrade it or fix it at any time you dont have to go back to them to get the bits.

Although having said all that the best way to go is to self build as you can get all the exact parts you want and need and dont have to compromise.

How does this one (http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=53827) look in your opinion? What items would you be inclined to upgrade? First glance I think I'd go for the geforce gfx card .... any suggestions? :drink:

Personally i would spend your £1800 on TWO, high end PCs use them for different things and buy a externa HDl for everything

We have 4 pcs two laptops but there is two of us
One for e-mail and general internet browsing and work documents
One for editing only
one for storage and uploading
one spare for dual browsing
the laptop does all the above but on a smaller scale

but each to their own needs I guess

DO not buy Dell for small businesses they have unremovable stuff on them like McAffee, AOL .etc that if you dont sigup for will cause you problems

And NEVER Use AOL to many conflicts with Microsoft software.
Try a small independant shop who may even put you together something tailored to your needs and they are always there for support....

Spec looks OK but it seems bloody expensive!! I would certainly add more RAM and move to XP Pro as a minimum which makes it even more costly. ATI v GeForce is an argument that will go on for as long as both companies exist - a bit like AMD v Intel, its down to personal preference and there is little difference in them really.

The processor in that is whats driving the cost of that system up - they had a similar system in one of the computer mags a few months back for about a grand but with a slightly slower processor. I will see if I can find it.........

JT..

Is 3.11 better than 3.1, I was thinking of upgrading but haven't seen any reports yet..

For pc's and spare parts etc. Here's a list of some places. They are all very reliable:

http://www.scan.co.uk
http://www.microdirect.co.uk
http://www.savastore.com

I bought the original parts for my pc, wholesale, in Vegas back in 2001, and had it built for me over here. All that's left now is the case. Building your own is the way to go.. You can upgrade everything as and when you want :)
