I did 4 years before! Then a stupid ex girlfriend, er, I mean boyfriend, smoked and I started again.
New one doesn't smoke. Good motivation.
2 hours now!!!
Good luck Damian
I gave up last January, unfortunately I lasted 9 months so by September I was back on them
It was my first proper attempt & it proved to me that it can be done so I'm gearing up for another attempt soon.
I think part of the trick is to try not to talk about it or think about it too much, that's hard as I know it becomes an obsession in counting how long you haven't had one, working out how much you've saved so far, etc, etc, just really try to not let it overcome your mind, also, try to change the routines around for when you used to light up, that helps too.
Keep at it !

I've managed 5 months tobacco-free now, and I've started turning into a smoke nazi. My sense of smell's improved and I complain if anyone lights up within a mile of me.
The first couple of weeks were bad, then it's been pretty easy. The heroin helps.
Tell you what did shock me was the bloody price of a pack of "B & H" these days, I never really looked as I've been on "Royals King Size" since last September, anyway, my local friendly tobaconist charges a Princely £5.90 for 20 B & H :noway2:
Good luck Damian

Thanks! I am on that drug that people here were saying was amazing. Champix. Makes me feel sick when I take it, but it says 1:10 get nausea.
It's kinda odd. I can't stop thinking about fags (ho ho no change there cos I love the cock etc), but I am not actually craving one. Weird.

It will be three years this November for me. I go running 10 miles 3-4 times a week these days, would never go back to smoking now.
Spending a lot of time visiting in and out of lung cancer wards in recent months, and seeing all the people who thought it wouldn't happen to them, kind of convinces me what a good move I made. :twocents:

but once you no longer smoke you can look down on these twisted people. i find spitting on them as you walk past makes you feel better. i belive legaly your allowed to punch smokers as they as lowest life form.

It's the new wonder drug for stopping fags. It targets the receptor in the brain that makes you want nicotine and is meant to make actually having a fag less pleasurable.

I went down the Champix route, went from almost 60 a day down to Zero.
Did have a bit of nausea in the first couple of weeks but not too bad. I did however make sure I didn't take a tablet just before going out in the car as I did sometimes get a little light headed.
I'm now in my 15th week and not a single ciggie.
Supposed to be on the wind down phase now (half dose) tablets but I stopped taking them a week back.
Good luck to all who try and Champix gets my vote.

The nausea is weird as it only lasts 3 minutes. But it is full on, saliva production in my mouth increases, sweat a little, then it just goes.
Hope mine passes as yours did. Well done for 15 weeks though. I am congratulating myself for 3 hours. :D

The nausea lasted longer for me (maybe 20 - 30 mins) but wasn't a bad, it was more like the feeling you get when over hungry. Also, I only got that before I actually stopped the smoking.
If you've got it right in the head and REALLY WANT to stop then the tablets will help you and you should find it quite easy.

A friend of mine's in the terminal stages of throat cancer, and visiting him is a great reminder of why not to smoke - not that I get the urge any more.
He had more than half his tongue removed 18 months ago, chemo and radiotherapy, then the cancer restarted, it's spread to several places and the doctors have given up treatment. The tumour in his throat is now so big he can barely breathe without effort, and every time he falls asleep he wakes up almost immediately because of not being able to breathe. He's been in constant pain for over a year. 2 years ago, he was a strong runner, and in great shape - just liked the odd roll-up from time to time. He's in his mid-40s.
I don't believe that tobacco (or any other drug) should be banned, but I think it's right that the government does everything possible to prevent tobacco companies from making their product visible and attractive.

Nah, she thinks I am GREAT. Taking me to meet her parents next week. Argh. :)What? You're going all the way to Romania?
I'm almost 10 years as a non smoker, found it pretty easy to give up. I found it easier to have a packet and not smoke rather than not have any at hand.
I don't know how anyone could start again, unless they really wanted to. I had a puff a few years ago and the taste was revolting. OK, I could get used to it, but why would I want to?

OK, "smoking-induced" so I did a typo, You still didn't say what "smoking-induced" cancer is. I'm sure "experts" would say that most forms of cancer were caused by smoking, if you actually smoked.
Roy Castle died of lung cancer but never smoked but if he had then it would have been blamed on that.

From what I remember Roy Castle's cancer was probably caused by him playing the trumpet in smokey clubs - inhaling great lungfuls of smokey air. At least, that's what he and his doctors thought.

I think you can tell from the cells, the kinds of cancer caused by smoking, and the ones that aren't - with lung cancer anyway. And Roy Castle had smokers' lung cancer even though he hadn't smoked - hence the whole passive smoking debate, and partly why we now have such nice smoke free pubs I imagine.
Some smokers still believe smoking has nothing to do with their illness to the bitter end - you see relatives carting them out in their wheelchairs into dull corners of the hospital grounds so they can have a "nice smoke", despite the fact they can't even get around on two legs any more thanks to fucking cigarettes. Suppose it doesn't matter by then....

Someone's friend's death is an excellent time to argue semantics.
People smoked. He got cancer because of this. Thus, his cancer was induced by smoking.
Some smokers still believe smoking has nothing to do with their illness to the bitter end
Would they have got cancer anyway, who knows?
My old man smoked like it was going out of fashion and my mum has been smoking since she was about 15, she is 84 this year and never really been ill in her life and is very active.
OK, I'm hardly saying that inhaling smoke into your lungs is good for you and if my kids started I would do my bollocks, but you can't blame every fucking desease going on it.
Don't worry anyway cos like I have said before smoking will be illegal one day, and probably in the not too distant future. Post you flying pig picture again strictlybroadband and I'll get a screen grab to say "told you so" when it happens.

I still don't know what "smoking-induced" cancer is, well strictlybroadband hasn't answered anyway. So are you saying that all forms of cancer are caused by smoking, whether it be you smoking or just from other people smoking?
I don't know the facts but I would be interested to know how many smokers get cancer and how many non smokers. You probably couldn't get a true figure cos we would need to believe it to be more smokers then non-smokers and of course blame the non-smokers cancer on passive smoking anyway.

Well the BMJ put out figures on death due to passive smoking.
Passive smoking kills more than 11,000 a year in the UK - much higher than previously thought, a study shows.
The British Medical Journal study also gives a figure for people dying from second-hand smoke in the workplace - 600 a year - for the first time.

There's no out and out proof that smoking causes cancer of any kind (for to get proof you would have to conduct scientific trials and induce cancer in healthy people with control groups etc). But there is an unquestionable statistical correlation between people who smoke and people who get a higher incidence of certain kinds.
